There’s no way this is going to be a bigger fight. Last year there were people who still believed in Garcia’s hype. Since he quit, many have jumped off the bandwagon. Sure there are still some idiots left but most know the deal with Garcia being more social media star than real boxer.

If being a "real boxer" meant more to the box office than being a social media star, Crawford or Haney would be bigger box office draws than Ryan Garcia. But they aren't.

Like it or not, Ryan Garcia sells tickets, sells PPVs. He is box office in a way that many other better, more proven, fighters are not.

The main reason this might not outperform the Tank fight, is that the numbers for the Tank fight were ridiculously big from two big draws coming together. Haney doesn't bring that to the table... but this time there is no catchweight. It's at an actual weight class that suits both fighters and therefore more of an even playing field, and that is one of the angles to sell it. The amateur rivals stuff is another. The latest chapter in Haney being willing to face all comers is another appealing aspect. Putting it in NY, the media capital of the world, is (I think) a smart move, though slightly counterintuitive given both fighters come from California. For all his faults, ODLH knows how to put together succesful fights.

People said that about him after losing to Tank. Gonna be very curious to see how he does PPV wise in this fight against a guy who doesn't sell well anyways, and how it compares to whatever crap fight Tank makes next.

If his "hype" is his social media following, let's look at the actual evidence to see whether what you are suggesting is true, or simply a bad faith argument.

Before the fight with Tank, his no. of instagram followers was around 9.5m. Now it's 10m. Doesn't look like half his hype has gone from this metric. Yes these will be casual fans, not hardcore boxing fans. But that's the point. You don't make massive sales via hardcore fans, you do it by crossing over to casuals.

I thnk it will sell, if Garcia can keep his head together (debatable at the moment!). Regardless, the proof will be in the pudding, so we'll just have to wait and see.

One of boxing's biggest problems is that fans ditch fighters as soon as they have an L or two on their record. It's why so many fighters are desperate to avoid risk, protect their 0 and why compelling, competitive fights at a high level are so few and far between.
