  • Anthony Joshua Explains Change of Trainer

He explained why he is sticking with Davidson.

The reason I was able to gel with Ben is because he doesn’t try to change your style,” Joshua continued. “He kind of looks at your attributes and adds to what you’re good at. I went to a stage where I was trying to change my style: a bit of back-foot boxing, box behind the jab, stick and move, not be explosive, control the pace, and stuff like that. But Ben was like: ‘That’s not your body type! You’re a f***ing big unit, you’re explosive, go and knock f***ing people out. Basically, work to your body type. So, we got along in that sense. He gets it.”
‘There isn’t much else out there in the UK,’ and that’s why I went to the States. If I knew any different, I would have stayed in the UK from the start, but I just didn’t know I’d work with Ben. It’s been really good, I do rate him, and the good thing about him is he’s got a team as well, so they all complement each other.

Oh now im really intrigued as to how that strategy is gonna work on Ngannou.

I cant see it ending well for Joshy.

Derrick James fighters are known for being aggressive and tough. Surprising to hear that he was pushing AJ to stick and move and be more cautious. Because watching the fights, it looked a lot more like AJ was just overthinking and being gunshy, which has been the case for years now, before James or Garcia were involved in his training.

Davidson is the guy who was criticised for having Fury be too defensive in the first Wilder fight, and was replaced by Fury for the rematch, where Fury went on the attack. So it's surprising to hear AJ's take. I think Davidson was happy for AJ just go out there and let his hands go because Wallin was no real threat. It won't stay that way vs better opponents.

That's plenty fair. Too many in this sport try to plaster their image of perfect over an imperfect human rather than playing up their strengths and minimizing their weakness.

Everyone says Wilder has to learn to box, it did him no good, ever. It was a waste of time that would have been better spent doubling down on what he is good at.

Joshua is on the better path.

That said, Joshua is a *****, Deontay isn't, we still believe Bombsquad would put down that long faced hoe.

To be fair Joshua is not an idiot. He knows Ngannou has a great chin and hits hard. He will go in with more than one plan. He learnt that from Ruiz 1.

Ngannou is the guy without the boxing experience. If he can't land a big punch on AJ, can he adapt? Seems unlikely he could ever outbox AJ.

BTW did anyone see that Ngannou said that Fury hit him harder than anyone ever has? I read that somewhere in a news article

I will say AJ has a standard right hand and a very hard left jab. I don't actually think he has huge power. He knocks people out with cumulative punches. That's what he will do here. If the stoppage comes, he will take it

I just want Wilder to work on his hook. If he had power in both hands and still knew how to pull the trigger, I wouldn't bet on anyone making it out of 12 with him.

I don't disagree with Ben. I think old AJ had a better chance to beat Usyk than the version of himself he was on at the time. Those fights weren't THAT wide with AJ playing Usyk's game. Its not hard to imagine if AJ had made Usyk play his game he mighta done a lil more to have gotten the win.

That said I think for Ngannou it might be better to do that Ruiz rematch play it safe style lol. If he goes aggressive at Ngannou I think that leads to Ngannou's widest path to victory.

From the stuff I heard in full context it sounded like AJ wanted a style change himself not that James was forcing him to fight this way.

To me it kinda sounds like Ben talked him away from that thinking. And sh^t man I think a lot of us fans have been saying since Wlad that we miss the old AJ. And even more say the same since the Ruiz 1 fight.
