Comments Thread For: Callum Smith: Beterbiev May Be A Monster, But He's Not Invincible; Been Put [Down] Twice

Callum Smith watched with piqued, personal interest when countryman Callum Johnson challenged Artur Beterbiev for the unbeaten Russian's IBF light heavyweight title five years ago. Johnson and Smith trained together, including numerous sparring sessions, before Beterbiev beat Johnson by fourth-

so was joe smith jr. Boxing nooobs think beterbiev is a first face brawler. They don't see the set ups, counter punching, and subtle defensive skills he has.

All it takes to gauge Smith's confidence is observing the picture.

          He has that "looking-forward-for-this-to-be-finished-soon" look.

it looks like he is 'bracing' his chin for an incoming punch - either way it's not a confident look

If I were Smith I'd be chanting that mantra to myself, "he's been put down before, he's been put down before, he's been...."

a man has got to have hope

Smith has to go into the fight acting confident and saying positive things. It’s in the ring however when all the talking is over. As a fighter Smith is very static and isn’t a great mover. He takes shots on the gloves and arms too and as Canelo showed, this makes him easy to back up and put pressure on. Canelo couldn’t put him down and he landed some big shots so I don’t think there’s any doubt that Smith can take a punch but he’s never fought at this weight against the World Champion before. Beterbiev is a skilled fighter. Look at his amateur pedigree. He can trade, box, come back from being on his arse and deservingly carries the belts he does. I see it being another fight for Smith where he’s bullied like Canelo did to him. As I Brit I’m rooting for him but I just can’t see it being anything else than a Beterbiev win

Will Callum Smith be the one to stop Beterbiev? Let's check in with John Matrix...

I don't know about you guys, but I am PUMPED for this one. I love watching the subtleties of Beterbiev's game. I also love how the casual fan thinks he is a plodder. Often the fighters that true fight fans really appreciate are the boring ones, but you cannot have 100% KO rate and be boring.
