Comments Thread For: BoxingScene.com's 2023 Fighter of The Year: Naoya Inoue

By Keith Idec - "The Monster" made 2023 his most historically significant year since Naoya Inoue made his pro debut in October 2012. Inoue entered the year as boxing's undisputed bantamweight champion. He ended the year as the sport's fully unified junior featherweight champion after defeating a pair of unified 122-pound champions during a legacy-enhancing five-month stretch.

No issues with the call. So even BoxingScene ignored Crawford’s cries about being FOTY.

Forget Inoue for a moment, nothing personal but is Zhang really the best there is left for the 5th HM candidate last year?

Crawford and Haney are obvious because I assumed it will be either one of them or Inoue to win. Benavidez I didn't expect to win, but had two good names defeated to be a candidate. Tszyu I didn't have in mind but he did fight three times and is the only active 154 Champion right now (until I actually see Jermell fight in 154 again I don't consider him anymore) so I can see the argument.

Zhang crushing Joyce twice including rematch was not bad but I can't deny that I feel there were better candidate than that last year.

The only other standout was Matias, but it’s a bit early to list him.

No argument here. Dude knocked off two respected unified titlists in impressive fashion and barely broke a sweat doing it. Despite Crawford-Spence being the biggest fight of the year and a total whitewash in his favor, it was his only fight. Gotta have at least two fights to be considered for FOTY IMO.

He wasn't gonna win, but for the last HM spot I thought Bam Rodriguez could've made a case.
I guess if Robeisy won against Espinoza maybe he could've gotten it as well.

Maybe I just don't rate rematches in the same year very highly unless the first one was a damn exciting one.

Don’t think Bam was active enough in 2023.

Zhang fought twice last year against both against Joyce to win and keep the interim belt. Bam fought twice as well, once against Gonzalez to win vacant WBO belt then once against Edwards to unify.

Not only Spence was the only Bud's fight, he was after car accident and alcohol problems.
