  • Comments Thread For: Prograis On Haney-Loma: At First, Honestly, I Thought Loma Won; Probably Could've Been Draw

Regis Prograis initially believed Vasiliy Lomachenko did enough to defeat Devin Haney. Once Prograis was solidified as Haney's next opponent, though, he went back and watched their lightweight title fight again. That's when Prograis determined that a draw likely would've been the fairest result of their 12-round, 135-pound championship match May 20 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

It was a close fight so however people scored it is up to them. But hate hearing the 'you have to take it from the champion' line. Not part of the scoring criteria, and anybody who gives a guy a close round just because he's the champ shouldn't score fights anymore.

Ironically, that only applies when the champ is the A side. I'm sure Haney will get the close rounds against Regis tonight.

It's called the unwritten rule. Judges score body language just as much as they score punches landed. If any said boxer behaves as if he doesn't want to take the title from the champion; Then chances are the judges are not going to give it to them either. in a championship bout; The judges almost always give the decision to the fighter who wants it the most.

So basically, the rule goes like this: "If you want to beat the A-Side, then YOU'VE GOT TO TAKE IT from the A-Side." --Every Judge In Vegas

That was a very fair assessment by Regis Prograis. Loma had the fight won. All he had to do was take more risks and string a few more punches together like he did in round 11; Throughout the course of the fight then he would have easily won it.

However, he decided to coast and attempted to defeat Haney at his own game instead. While allowing precious seconds and minutes of each round go by without throwing any punches.

I've said it then and I'm saying it now. Loma just wasn't active enough in order to justify winning that fight.

Great observation! I guess he must have forgot that Prograis is the champion this time around and not Devin Haney because this fight is at 140

Going into the sixth round, Loma was a -125 with Vegas. Do you know what that means? Going from a +350 or +400 to a -125 after five rounds? He means he was kicking Devin's ass for most of those rounds. Going into the twelfth round, Loma was a -400. Devin was a +500 at that point!! Do you know what that means? Devin had to KO Loma to win in the eyes of Vegas. And Vegas is not about losing money. "Vegas" doesn't care about either fighter, just about making money and not losing any. Vegas lost money that night. That really never happens. Last time that happened was Golovkin vs Canelo.
