  • Comments Thread For: Usyk: If Joyce Doesn't Change Anything In His Style, Result Will Be Same In Zhang Rematch

Oleksandr Usyk doesn't really care who wins the Zhilei Zhang-Joe Joyce rematch next month, even though he might eventually defend his heavyweight titles against whoever emerges victorious.

I still feel Joyce changed too much of what works for him in his first fight with Zhang. Came in way lighter, stayed on the outside, lost his "bull in a china shop" aggressiveness, zero counterpunching when Zhang opened up. That Juggernaut attitude was replaced with something fairly passive. I do think Zhang was slowing down as the fight went on, but the damage was done. If Joyce comes in closer to his normal weight and attitude, I think he wins. I have repeatedly said this, so there will be no backtracking from me if I am wrong. But I just firmly believe we have seen the absolute best version of Zhang that first fight, he was hitting on all cylinders. I do not think we saw anywhere near the best version of Joyce, but we likely will in the rematch.

For Joyce's sake we better, or Zhang may do some real damage with using his noggin for target practice.

If Joyce doesn't move laterally he'll lose again. Zhang has the faster straighter punches. Zhang's left vs Joe's right is not even a contest.

Keep the jab active, keep moving left, sweep an occasional right to the body as you pass, in a test of stamina, Joe wins that easily.

Good points. It was the speed of the straight left that caused Joe the biggest problems (though Zhang was still hitting him with the right hook pretty easily as well). Joe's chin could take the shots, but the straight left was hit so often and with so much power +accuracy that the eye was never going to stand up to that kind of punishment. Find a way to foil the left landing with the same ease and Joyce probably has the engine and punch resistance to take Zhang deep and stop him.
