Research on boxing Headgear shows it reduces punching pain from punching 45-65% so if a person gets knocked down in headgear does it mean they have a bad chin ?

Depends on the KD. Could just be getting caught out of position, like a flash KD. And the main thing that causes damage is not seeing the punch. If you saw the punch and were in the pocket but still got knocked down and it wasn't just being off balance, then yes, the chin is probably suspect. Neck, really though. There's a reason fighters do neck exercises...

Boxing headgear does not reduce pain, that’s completely false. It’s more so there to mitigate injuries such as cuts. If anything if makes your noggin a bigger target to get tagged. Those of us who have trained, sparred, and competed can attest to that.

And to answer the thread, no, getting dropped in sparring does not necessarily mean you’re cursed with a bad chin. All the elite fighters go through rounds of rigorous sparring and they all get hurt, wobbled, and many dropped. It’s a a necessary evil of the sport. Now if a fighter is getting flat out KOd in sparring with 16 or 18 ouncers then yes, that’s a major concern.

Headgear does "cushion" the blow too though. That's a big deal. The way people go to war sparring, you'd think they wouldn't even make it to the pros.

I wouldn't say it deals with pain though. With headgear on, I never felt "pain", I got some headaches afterwards, but it honestly felt like, if you ever rode a roller coaster and your head hits the back of the seat or if you ride the ****** Riddler standing coaster, it has those side head rests. I recall whacking my head into those constantly while riding. That was the same feeling I got being punched with headgear on.

Adding to the reasons listed, it could just be a bad day for the fighter. He's getting put through the wringer of camp, he's cutting weight, and he's sparring while tired but his sparring partners are fresh(ish).

Ryan Garcia never got dropped or really hurt n sparring. But now has been dropped 3 times. He had 200+ amateur fights. He’s the perfect example.

They have the head gear with the nose guard and it limits visibility. Regardless most head gears don't have a chin protection plus they are suppose to be sparring with 16 ounce gloves or higher.

Headgear doesn’t always cover the chin
