enough about them...when is your next fight and who are you fighting next Thurman!

The criticism is fair but there's hardly a fighter in history who's fought every single competitor. I don't think those names affect Mayweather's legacy but I understand why people bring them up. I would of liked to see Mayweather against Williams especially. Did Mayweather fight lesser competition in order to avoid those names in your opinion?
Paul Williams and Floyd were both prime when Williams begged for the fight. Floyd refused to talk about Paul Williams, he'd cut off the interview. IMO Paul Williams would have smoked Floyd, Pau thought so and and more importantly so did Floyd. Margaritto pulled up on Floyd, Floyd started shuddering, he simply did NOT want to fight prime Margaritto. Everyone saw it, it was all over the internet.Comment

Thurman has a right to talk, no doubt, but his wins over Porter and Danny do not compare to Mosley who wa the consensus #1 WW at that time after dismantling Margarito. So much so that Manny ducked him, asking for a catchweight of 142.
Look to save Floyd all you want, Thurman beat Garcia and Porter in their prime for two thirds of the belts and called Floyd out.
Floyd totally ducked him.
Mosley was a shopworn 38 year old fighter by the time Floyd got around to fighting him, and Manny had 60+ fights plus been ko'd previously.
Name wise they are more significant, prime wise no.
Thurman has a right to talk.
And Floyd and Manny, even past their best were still the top 2 in the division.Comment

So Thurman can have a right to talk on one hand, and you give Floyd excuses on the other.

I am sorry but you keep bringing up Floyd beating shopworn fighters thats not that impressive.

i mean, it's easy to look at baldomir and ortiz as lesser competition now, and i guess it's true because they weren't that good. but when floyd fought baldomir, baldomir had the ring belt. berto was the wbc champ and it was widely expected that he would be next in line to fight mayweather. not that anyone thought he would win but there wasn't outrage over it since people generally thought he earned that shot. but then ortiz beat him so ortiz suddenly became a lead candidate. mayweather took him instead since ortiz now had the wbc belt. this looks worse in retrospect because the fight was ****. but these werent just random dudes he picked out, they were all current champions and in baldomir's case, he was the ring champ.Thurman's right but who he talking about welterweight Floyd Scared Money Mayweather. Wanted nothing but easy fights at welterweight. For him to go undisputed that mean he would have had to beat prime A fighters back to back. Floyd wanted more Baldymir's, Ortiz's and Madonnas in his life not prime Williams and Margarito
as for maidana, i dont think anyone had an issue with the fight as maidana was the wba champ. this was right after he beat canelo and moved back down to welter. people said maidana gave him a lot of trouble so he rematched him and won again. i think people generally are ok with these two fights.
you're right he didnt fight prime williams but if you look at the period where you would consider williams in his prime (2007 after the margarito win to 2010) it's pretty clear why he didnt fight williams. it's easy to just criticize him for it but if you look at the chronology of events, he fought de la hoya and hatton during that time which were much bigger fights. there's no way you can reasonably expect him to take williams or margarito over either of those 2 fights as that'd be ridiculous. then he retired for 2 years. say what you want about that but i doubt he retired because he was trying to duck williams or margarito. when he came back he fought marquez which again is a bigger fight. he followed that up by fighting the #1 welterweight which was shane mosley. so for this part of his career i would give him a pass over margarito since he fought the #1 guy at welter who recently beat the crap of margarito. as for williams he had already moved up to a different weight class and had a huge fight lined up against sergio at this point. he got exposed to the point where lara literally just hit him with the same punch that martinez ko'ed him with throughout the fight then got robbed. williams fought one more time then had to retire right before his canelo fight. the only time floyd could've fought williams in his prime was after the mosley fight AND if williams hadn't taken the martinez rematch since williams would not be considered in his prime after that fight or if floyd hadn't had that mini retirement.
outside of the last 2 fights of his career, you couldn't really fault him for the fights that he took between 2005-2015. they were either huge fights, he was fighting a top guy or a guy with a belt. he might not have unified but he was really only missing the IBF belt at one point. but that was a belt he actually did have earlier (after the judah fight). he vacated it because let's be honest, the ibf belt does not matter, however, if you want to criticize him over that just look at the list of ibf champions between 2010-2015. They are berto, randall bailey, devon alexander, shawn porter, kell brook. mayweather would've dog walked all of them at that point. then you can ask yourself if you would've been happy if floyd took a fight against any of those guys cuz i'm pretty sure if he did fight them for the belt, people would criticize him for picking weak opposition.
as for thurman, this guy doesnt even fight and only had like 2 title defenses that you would consider quality. 3 if you count pacquiao but he lost that fight so it doesnt matter.Last edited by danktrees; 06-23-2023, 10:26 PM.Comment

2 things can be true and they are. Which is why Thurman lost to Pacquiao years later. Was Floyd not shopworn at age 37?Comment

Why can't it just be admitted that at welterweight the fighters Floyd was fighting who were any good were shopworn, either pushing 40 or been kod, been in wars or we saw other fighters beat them worse.
It was about waiting them out get get the most money with the least amount of risk plain and simpleLast edited by djtmal; 06-24-2023, 11:01 AM.Comment
