  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya on Tank-Garcia: The Weight Drain Was a Huge Issue!

Oscar De La Hoya insists Ryan Garcia's defeat to Gervonta Davis was partly a result of the concessions that were granted during their negotiations. The founder of Golden Boy Promotions has long insisted that Garcia, his star client, was severely disadvantaged by the

    Darn right Oscar.

Sure Davis can win when they are required to weigh roughly the same on the day of the fight, but lets see him take on Garcia who significantly outweighs him in the ring. That would be more of a fair fight

That is the unfortunate thing of catch weights. The loser will always have an excuse and the win is minimized. I don't mind if there is a catchweight that is fair for both fighters but this fight had many stipulations.

The silly rehydration was obviously a big factor. But the truth is, Ryan fought careless trying to push the action, he gave away all his advantages. And Tank was patient.

Ryan is a better fighter than we saw in that ring. Not sure if Goosen was just telling him to swing for the fences or what. But he should have been patient, worked behind the jab far more and timed Davis as the fight went on. All credit to Tank, he fought very smart.

If Garcia gets a better trainer, he still has time to develop. With his power and natural advantages, he could be a very good fighter.

Ryan himself said that he doesn't like to blow up before the fight and he doesn't even weight 150 on fight night. Ryan lost because he's not better than Tank point blank. I thought Tank was the fat (porky) one that has trouble making weight. Ryan has height and reach advantages. You wanted Ryan to come in at 170 too lol. Who really needs the advantages?

Bernard Hopkins Wants Ryan Garcia To Fix His Fighting Style Moving To 140
            April 25, 2023

“He still has to work on his defense, which needs to be tighter,” said Bernard Hopkins to Fighthype about what Ryan Garcia must change in moving to 140. “I’d like to see Ryan fight at a weight he’s comfortable at without giving up anything to make [a fight happen] from now on. That’s a super fight or any other fight. It might not be that easy, and he might not be able to achieve that. I see what other people see. His defense has to be tight, and it’s not in his best interest to fight with his head up, leaving himself exposed. Those things cost him for this big moment [against Gervonta Davis], and they’ll cost him later. He’s still obviously young enough to come back. He still has fire in his belly."

Hopkins Does Not Believe Weight Clauses Played Role in Ryan Garcia Loss
            May 1, 2023

"I don’t think it affected him to the point where he couldn’t perform the way he did. I don’t think it affected him where he looked like a skeleton on the scales. I thought [physically] Ryan looked great, his skin still had moisture on it when I watched him," Hopkins told The DAZN Boxing Show. I just think that he got caught with a shot that he didn’t see on the side of the liver or rib that was already bruised and breached."

Devin Haney can make weight, not complain, and win an undisputed fight. If Ryan G. would have won then nothing would have been said about the weight agreement.

Obviously it was huge factor.. anyone saying otherwise is an absolute idiota.. if it’s not going to benefit you what is the purpose of demanding it.. it taints your “victory” and gives the fighter an out because you didn’t beat him at his best.

Shut up with that narrative already Oscar, this isn't helping you or your charge. It's time to keep it moving, and either Ryan will learn, and grow from this, or he'll continue reliving the past. So what's it going to be forward movement, or stagnant repetition?

he looked the same fighter as always with the same vulnerabilities...i get the feeling some fighters who arent sure they are going to win like having something in the contract that they can use as an excuse when they lose
