He was unbeatable in his prime.
Guy was a certified badass. He even became the inspiration for a main antagonist (Jose Mendoza) in a Japanese animated show called A****a no Joe.

So did Ricardo Lopez (Ricardo Martinez), Juan Manuel Marquez (Alfredo Gonzalez) and Jose Medel (Carlos Medel) in a different animated series called Hajime no Ippo and Kengan Omega. Might be odd to point out, I just think it is interesting that they had this kind of influence in Japan.

As for his record with context he beat:

-Rodolfo Martinez a champion at 118-122 who defeated and derailed underrated Rafael Herrera, the same fighter had defeated Martinez twice prior to his defeat, Chucho Castillo, Ruben Olivares, Venice Borkhorsor (known for defeating HOF Betulio Gonzalez), and Bobby Chacon.

-Alfonso Zamora, an Olympian Silver medalist who became a world champion who was 29-0 (29 KOs), he defeated Hong Soo-hwan X2 and Eusebio Pedroza who then went to defeat Ruben Olivares, Rocky Lockridge X2, Juan Laporte and Jorge Lujan.

This was prior to Zamora turning 23 years old and getting derailed by Zarate.

-Alberto Davila a world champion at 118 who beat Lupe Pintor, and Miguel Lora (who defeated Daniel Zaragoza).

-Andres Hernandez a ranked contender who was winning the scorecards against Wilfredo Gomez until he got knocked out in the late rounds.

-Very controversial loss to Lupe Pintor after his comeback fight against Wilfredo Gomez, the public had him ahead in the scorecards by 7-5. Lupe Pintor defeated Alberto Davila, Lee Seung-hoon and Jorge Lujan.

Still though, I wouldn't know where to place him, likely 8-10, Saldivar, Estrada and Canto did pretty well for themselves though, so I am not sure.

Wanted to revisit this thread, such a short period of time has passed since I wrote this but Canelo's behavior during 2024 has convinced me that he isn't confident on his ability to take on the most difficult challenges available.

Basically whether he retires or not, I do not think he will do anything revelant in the sport anymore. While I think he did well by doing something such as climbing up to 4 divisions and fighting some top names like Trout, GGG, Plant and Bivol which is commendable. With 50-60% of his top opponents having significantly declined by the time he fought them (Cotto, Mosley and GGG) and applying stipulations (Lara, Jacobs, and Kovalev), it's difficult to think he deserves to be in the top 5.

Of course he deserves a degree credit by beating them, but with such significant advantages I think it takes away from his legacy.

You can certainly compare Canelo to JC. There are even certain milestones that are similar, as my good friend headshots, before being institutionalized pointed out, both men lost to athletic black Fighters who were truly atg level with no caveats. And Chavez was very lucky to get the KO against another great Black Fighter who is kicking his ass. There's certain parity with those two.

They sure have similarities, and there is no shame to losing to a accomplished fighter whose a HOF or ATG, Chavez didn't deserve a draw against Sweet Pea who Pernell should had won, no matter the style although that doesn't seem to be the mindset with modern fighters.

Other than that, having similarities doesn't say enough if Canelo accomplished more than let's say Chavez, Sanchez or Marquez. Also not sure what none accomplished fighter you mean with Alvarez, do you mean the 36 year old Mayweather? Kirkland? Trout? Jacobs? Obviously, not Charlo considering he couldn't be actual opposition being two divisions below.

Also doubt Chavez Sr got lucky beating Taylor considering how he basically hospitalized the golden Olympian suffering major brain damage. The stoppage might be controversial, but nonetheless Meldrick wasn't coming out the same fighter either way with Chavez Sr still accomplishing more afterwards.
