Comments Thread For: Gervonta Davis: 'This Fight Is Bigger Than Me and Ryan'

Gervonta Davis understands that his upcoming showdown with Ryan Garcia transcends their individual appeal. "Tank" Davis and Garcia are scheduled to face each other April 22 in a 12-round, 136-pound bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Showtime pay-per-view.

It’s a shame Tank’s team felt they had to drain Garcia. Instead of fighting him at full strength.

Rehydration clauses are good. It encourages people to fight at their own weight or level up their discipline. It's really weird that you've got this big a problem with it, even more than Garcia does.

I just think people make it up as they go along whether they want it or not if Lomachenko asked Haney for a rehydration clause he would get roasted into oblivion just people love tank right now so he has an army of defenders. I get it from Tanks point of view but no doubt it shows he's worried about Garcia.

Did you see the press conference yesterday? Looked like tank was more dehydrated than Garcia. Garcia looked the better of the two physically imo

If Ryan catches him fine, but if it becomes a slugfest Tank will prevail with better movement and quickness. Watch out for the uppercut Ryan.

I say bring back same day weigh ins. I hate the rehydration clause but I also hate fighters coming in weigh over the day after weigh in. Squeezing down in weight just to get an advantage is bs imo

Catchweight AND a rehydration clause AND a later than usual weigh-in time.

I do have a problem with that.

Rehydration rules/clauses are unhealthy and unsafe and they don’t deter at any significant level. Many have argued that day of weigh ins didn’t allow boxers to fully rehydrate, hence day before weigh in. The first proves that boxers are willing to go into the ring dehydrated. The latter encourages dehydration, but allows time to rehydrate. There is fine line between something that is a deterrent or something that is designed as punishment if you decide to do so. Athletes at this level, specifically with weight classes will always take risks to gain advantage. The only thing that would protect boxers and “encourage people to fight in there own weight classes”, is hard fast rules. A deterrent to a boxer is immediately interpreted as something “high risk, high reward”. And we all know what decision they will make.
