Roy Jones was supposed to fight Michael Nunn for the defence of his WBC lhw title in early '98, but he suddenly wanted to fight Buster Douglas instead and vacated it. As we know, Douglas was garbage by then and it musta been a safer alternative somewhat to fight him rather than a guy like Nunn. Even if he wasn't no longer in his prime, Nunn would still be a very tough fight for Jones and Jones knew it. He was much taller than Jones, yet he wasn't much slower than him. He could also punch and Jones was aware of this.
Ironically, Nunn went on to lose against the clever German fighter Rocchigiani on SD and Jones decided to return to the division right afterwards. Somehow he got restored as the "real" champ without having to fight Rocchigiani and the German himself first got demoted to interim champ and then stripped completely. He sued and got 31 mill in damages. Sordid affair, hm?
