I don’t know if I buy the black market streaming rationale. It’s not like we’re talking about 30 years ago. Mayweather vs mcgregor was less than 6 years ago and there were plenty of streaming sites then. Canelo is currently the biggest star but he just doesn’t create the same kind of interest or buzz as previous stars did. Part of that is his opponent selection as well. Fighting a bunch of domestic level British guys isn’t going to create tremendous buzz in the US.

Dazn has overpaid everyone, canelo included. He hasn’t sniffed 1 mil us Ppv buys in 5 years. His biggest Ppv since then was with pbc against plant. He’s also a reason why dazn is losing money. That’s why they bailed on his initial contract when their subscription numbers for his fights didn’t justify his guarantee. That’s why they purposely backtracked their Ppv is dead argument and made canelo fights Ppv’s and he is barely getting half a mil buys. The numbers are so bad that they don’t even officially release the us buy rates for him. The difference with Floyd and pac , especially Floyd, is at their peak they were selling over a mil Ppv’s on a regular basis. As the A side Canelo has only sold over a mil with Chavez jr and ggg, and like I said, that was 5 years ago.
Again, the spending the didn't make any kind of sense was giving A side money to fighters who've never been draws like Jacobs. And it was just baffling to give $100m to GGG who was never a major A side draw even at his peak with HBO working overtime to hype him, let alone coming off a loss and strictly fighting gatekeepers.Comment

You act like Canelo isn't a proven draw on the open market. His 3 fights prior to signing with DAZN did +1M ppv buys and his recent fight on Showtime overperformed according to most expectations with +750K sales and a $18M gate despite Plant not being known to casuals. If DAZN is dissatisfied with their numbers the blame lies with the roll out of their app, their marketing, inconsistent business model and the subpar production quality of their broadcasts, but you're trying to put that on Canelo when he's the main reason DAZN is talked about?

So you want to blame every and anything else but not Canelo? It’s Dazn fault, it’s the other fighters faults, but not Canelo who in no way has justified his massive guarantee with weak buy rates and lane opponent selections. Again, the facts are Canelo is a draw in todays weak era of draws but not compared to the real draws of the past. He’s only drawn over a mil as the A side against 2 guys his entire career and that was 5 years ago. Yes dazn overpaid ggg and Jacobs and Andrade and they also overpaid Canelo. And if you think Canelo is the only reason dazn is talked about, you’re delusional. Aj and other sports such as soccer have drawn more overall interest to their app world wide than Canelo.Comment

You Canelo haters have lost the plot. DAZN isn't paying him in a vacuum, they have to offer that amount to compete with other platforms like Showtime wanting another taste of the revenue he brought them. The Plant numbers were big period, let alone in the midst of the pandemic and with there being more competition than ever including from pirate streaming. If DAZN is unable to capitalize in the same way, of course that's on them. All Canelo can do is fight, he can't run their business for them. Obviously DAZN keeps coming back to the table because they appreciate the value he brings both in terms of revenue and marketing. Their other signings brought them neither. But with or without them, Canelo is getting paid either way despite haters being butt hurt about it.
