A couple things
Vitali was a Pro kickboxer and Amateur boxer at the same time i believe.
With Maskaev as mentioned he was injured going into the fight and had either
1) more important Amateur boxing tourney coming up
2)or an important Pro Kickboxing fight in a few days
not sure which but his trainer stopped the fight cuz he didnt want Vitali any more injured than he already was for the upcoming event
Kickboxing was more popular in Europe up until perhaps the mid-90's. That's why guys like Vitali,Povetkin,Vovchanchyn were Kickboxers and why Vitali was more focused on his Kickboxing initially.
And as for the Pele fight there are all kinds of different accounts but for the one guy who asked if Pele would make it up, who knows? You beat a guy who becomes a World champ and Pele was never more than a mediocre boxer as you mentioned so perhaps he did in fact win and the details got embellished so he can have a claim to fame. Without video we won't know.
