Canelo was a fully fledged midweight for years but invented that 155lbs "Canelo-weight" division to avoid GGG. He should've been campaigning there as early as 2014 but waited it out until 2017 until he had no other available options to fall back on.

Fighters negotiate the best terms for themselves. SRL did it vs Duran when they offered huge money for the immediate rematch knowing how badly out of shape he was he did it vs hagler giving up a percentage of his purse for a fighting in a bigger ring.
