I can't believe that decision is being disputed.

I have no problem with the stoppage. He was hurt and I can see why the corner would try to protect the fighter.
Having said that, I also wouldn't have had a problem if they had waited to see if he recovered in time for the start of the next round.Comment

Nothing against Ben, he seems alright. But Wood wanted to continue and should've be allowed the chance. If you take that level of caution as a trainer to Gatti's career he would've had 20+ losses from all the towels coming in. I don't want another tragedy, but Wood is a grown man and only he knows how clear his head is and if he wants to fight on. If he clinches Lara for a few seconds he gets out of the round and then the corner can see how well he recovers and if they send him back out.
Wood has taken 1000s of punches during his life. As a kid, an amateur, sparring, low level pro fights. People have suffered serious injuries in those types of fights and even in sparring. There's always a risk but if there was ever a time to take that risk, it's in the biggest fight of your life. All those other punches he took, all those other risks, this fight was what it was all for. The reward for winning an amateur fight is basically nothing, the reward for winning last night was he carries on as a world champion making good paydays at the highest level. Wood was a domestic fighter not long ago.
The expectation before the fight was that Wood loses by KO. So when he got badly hurt I think the trainer was influenced by that and was quicker to believe he was done. As hurt as Wood was, he still had a chance. We recently say Navarette dropped so hard he needed extra time from the ref to survive the round, and he came back to win. It happens. Davidson stated he would never throw the towel in for Tyson Fury when he fought Wilder. So to be ok with it when your guy faces the biggest puncher in the sport but not for this fight is inconsistent. Fury is a better fighter than Wood but great fighters can suffer brain injuries too.Last edited by Clegg; 02-19-2023, 10:54 AM.Comment

There were two options: see if he can recover or see if he can get very seriously hurt. It was a right call.Comment
