The more he talks the more he sounds like a clown. Phoenix born and bred. It would be different if he said next great Mexican American.

Don't think he is even considered by the Mexican people to be a Mexican fighter. Good promotion ploy thought and if he wins his next fight Canelo can fight him because that dude is like a third Mexican.Comment

In answer to your question, it is all about the $$$$. Mexicans are passionate about boxing. In contrast, boxing is a fringe sport in the good ole USA and most young people ignore it. That is why Golovkin, a West Asian national of Korean-Russian origin tried to pass himself off the real "Mexican-style" fighter. This is all disrespectful to the various ethnicities involved and off-putting.Comment

He is not going to get the same reputation that ATG Mexicans have. You never hear Mexicans rooting or favoring fighters like Bobby Chacon, Chico Corrales, Oscar De La Hoya, Danny Lopez, Michael Carbajal, Orlando Canizales, Johnny Tapia and Genaro Hernandez over native born fighters.
Jose Luis Castillo vs Chico Corrales X2
Oscar De La Hoya vs Julio Cesar Chavez
Salvador Sanchez vs Danny Lopez
Michael Carbajal vs Humberto Gonzalez
Johnny Tapia vs Marco Antonio Barrera
Genaro Hernandez vs Jorge Paez
Bobby Chacon vs Ruben Olivares
If David Benavidez vs Canelo Alvarez were to happen it will be no different, the fanbase is going to side with Canelo.
Heck, most likely won't recognize someone as great as Roberto Duran, whose father is a Mexican American.
