The Press Box Podcast: Mayweather's PPV numbers prove he's boxing's biggest draw

By Josh Slagter | The Grand Rapids Press

    September 28, 2009, 2:35PM

Floyd Mayweather showed little rust from a 21-month layoff when he dominated Juan Manuel Marquez on Sept. 19 in Las Vegas. And when the pay-per-view numbers came in last week, it became clear boxing fans couldn't wait for his return.

After 1 million buys, columnist David Mayo says Mayweather's demands for a potential future fight with Manny Pacquaio now hold even more merit. Still, it's the fight everybody wants and while negotations won't be easy, the fight should happen if Pacquiao beats Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14.

        Jones,

Is it strange to see FMJ getting more attention in the media than the guys who actually have a fight coming up?

        • With Richard Schaefer saying that Pac-Cotto will do "600K or whatever", I'm concerned about the projected sales for "Firepower". Richard doesn't usually talk smack, and (unlike Roach/Arum) he doesn't really badmouth his competition.

If Firepower doesn't do (at least) close to a million, then we will not see May-Pac. Arum will just do the Pac-Migs rematch.

Right now, this Pac-Cotto fight has not captured the interest of the mainstream casual fan.

Al Hay, Pacquiao has went a record saying his next fight should be Mayweather.
the entire Pinnoy country talks about Mayweather more than they do cotto.
[ GOOGLE IT] so i think arum will try and do a rematch. But honestly Pacquiao wants this fight more than he does this cotto fight...
which IMO, is why he might lose to cotto. because he is focusing on Mayweather and other ****.

So i think pacquiao will take the lesser cut just like he did with De la hoya.
because he knows even if he takes less against mayweather. he will still make more money fighting anybody else.

I don't know why Pac has focused on percentages so much. You deposit dollars in the bank. Not percentages.
