Good point here mate, i completely forgot that this fight was during Mexcian Independance weekend. You heard the reception at the weigh-in, I think it was fairly obvious it was mostly Marquez fans, despite being in Mayweathers home town..... seriously imagine if that was Pacquiao fighting Marquez last weekend, could anyone honestly argue it wouldnt have sold more?

Just to show Im not being bias towards Mayweather, I really wanted this fight to sell big to blow away the UFC sales.

Not really surprised by these figures, I mean Mayweather is American and pretty much fightin at home in Las Vegas. Pacquiao is fighting half way around the world.

You have to remember that lower weight classes generally dont sell as well as the higher ones and Pacquiao's popularity has only peaked over the last couple of years as he's come up through the weight classes, so its slighly unfair comparing the fights before that.

Look how similar the fights with Hatton are though, despite Pacquiao's being during a recession and without an American fighter on show.

It's not even questionable who the more exciting fighter is and you can do polls anywhere on who is more popular or who people would rather pay to watch, because Pacquiao will win them all day long.

I hope you keep this post and compare the Mayweather/Marquez and Pacquiao/Cotto sales for this year, because I have a feeling you will be eating your words.

Isnt it surprising how people are now rationalising Mayweather selling more.
Everyone used to claim Mayweather wouldnt sell without DelaHoya and Hatton.

The FMJ/Marquez outcome was already known the minute the fight was announced.....total mismatch and it showed. The undercards were way more competitive than the main event and they ****** too!. It speaks volumes when the best fight of the night was the Cornelius Locke fight!!!!

Floyd disrespected his opponent by not coming @ 144lbs, disrespected boxing by not doing the fight night weigh in (heard he weighed somewhere in the 158/163lbs range) and disrespected the fans for playin bi.tchboy for not accepting SSM challenge after he "called him out" (same excuse he used in accepting his fight w/ Marquez)......

and your comparison wouldnt be complete also if you dont take into account the post/pre Delahoya effect. surely you would agree the delahoya fights played a huge role in their ppv numbers before and after.

When you strip away everything else except the subject and objective, you are left with the quote above. That is the essence of what you are saying.

Whether people want to see Floyd win, lose, or spontaneously combust, they want to see Floyd.

You can argue that the Toyota Camry (or Ford Taurus) wasn't the best, fastest, prettiest, sexiest, cheapest car on the road. But at the end of the day, they sold the most. And their competitors were left playing catch-up and trying to pump out imitators. Classic B-school case study.
