First time I watched Coetzee I was still a kid, it was his upset win over Leon Spinks that I will never forget. RIP Gerrie.

RIP Champ you made us South Africans proud with so many exciting fights . Gerrie always had exciting fights his win over Spinks was probably a bigger achievement than beating Dokes for the title. Gerrie also was robbed in the Renaldo Snipes fight a hometown decision if their ever was one. RIP the Boksburg bomber and God Bless your family.

Wonderful hand/foot speed for a heavyweight and devastating power. In his loss to Greg Page, he was involved in a bizarre 4 minute round( round 8 I think it was) in which he was knocked out. How could that even happen and why was it allowed? That match should have been declared a no-contest. Other South African heavyweight greats were Corrie Sanders who knocked Klitschko out, Pierre Coetzee who lost to a resurgent Foreman, Johnny du Plooy, Kallie Knoetze, Mike Schutte, Mike Koranicki, Francois Botha.

I would agree on that dokes win, at the time dokes was considered one of the best in terms of handspeed, and really could dish it out. I did not expect to see dokes lose that especially being undefeated and beating the likes of Cobb and surviving Hercules weaver

Yes I agree other than Larry Holmes Dokes was probably the 2nd best heavyweight at the time it just shows the power of Gerrie especially against Spinks who's only loss at the time was against Ali.

I remember Gerrie towards the end of his prime. Involved in some exciting fights, I recall his fights seemed to end in stoppage one way or another.

There have been a lot of capable and entertaining South African heavyweights. RIP champ.

A name I shall never forget. Great name from eighties heavyweight boxing, and an all-time great South African. Rest In Peace, Gerrie. May God keep you always.
