Paulie Malignaggi is a better analysis of boxing, pundit and presenter than he is a commentator 'I think his strengths are better displayed in that type of environment'.
His round-table discussions with other pundits and fighters are great 'Because there always seems to be a competitive element to them, between the pundits'.
But as a commentator, I think it takes a different set of skills. As others have mentioned? Working with other people around you. Knowing when to not say anything, and picking the right time to talk.
Malignaggi most likely has all those skills, but I honestly think he prefers to debate and analyse the action more in-depth 'With other pundits'.
When Mike Tyson fought Henry Tillman and knocked him out in the first round. Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant, performed very well. Neither Lampley or Merchant were shouting or jeering, the knock out was a ionic and so was the commentary.
Merchant in the moments after the knock out quite simply said 'Surprise'.
That is good commentating. And there are many more moments of great commentary like that pretty much throughout the entire 70's, 80's & 90's.
