While it remains unknown how well Floyd Mayweather's return to the ring did on pay-per-view and closed circuit, his easy 12-round decision against a Mexican opponent didn't sell out despite it being Mexican Independence weekend.
Attendance at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas was announced at 13,116, but Thursday the numbers showed that 12,009 tickets were sold at face value, 895 tickets were comps — or giveaways — and 2,645 went unsold.
The total gate: $6,811,300.
The base salary for Mayweather was $10 million while Juan Manuel Marquez cleared $2 million.
Golden Boy Promotions, co-promoter of the event, said after Saturday show that according to early reports they expected the bout to approach and possibly exceed one million PPV buys which would be a gross of at least $50 million. Richard Schaefer, CEO of GBP, said after Saturday's bout that the numbers would be released by week's end.
He also said Mayweather's next bout would be completely up to the former welterweight champion, though Schaefer is pushing for him to meet 147-pound champion Shane Mosley rather than current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Pacquiao has a Nov. 14 date with Miguel Cotto. Both are promoted by Bob Arum's Top Rank.
"It's up to Floyd," Schaefer said. "Oscar had the choice to pick who he wanted to fight. Now Floyd Mayweather is in that position. He has inherited the vacant throne of pay-per-view king.
"This fight might put his average pay-per-view performance to over a million per fight. Who has done that? Nobody? When you are the pay-per-view king you can pick the dates. The date will be there for you, just like it was for Oscar."Comment

The most pathetic thing is that facts like this actually bring happiness and glee and fits of giggling to Mayweather critics.
I personally think it's kind of weird. I don't know why tax information and gate attendance is fascinating... unless we have a lot of Algebra majors here. (hm, i actually hope so- would explain the **** spelling alot of Floyd haters showcase)
Here is something to consider, Floyd haters. If you can research facts and figures, consider this one:
12.5 MILLION AMERICANS OUT OF WORK.
I hope that sends you into fits of giggles as well. After all, going to see a live boxing event in circumstances like that, especially when all is available were not the best seats, is sure to not be as much of a priority when it is, in fact, a luxury. According to a CNN research, 2 million more Americans have lost their jobs since May alone. You mean to say that isn't even a slight factor in gate attendance? Concerts, stand up comedy- all of it isn't doing the same numbers it was doing a year ago.Comment

Over 12,000 of the 13,000 seats sold at face value.
Only 12,000 of the 13,000 seats sold at face value.
That reads completely differently - doesn't it? The reality is that having over 90% at face value is very good. Fewer than 10% were discounted. And anyone who knows a bit about economics knows price elasticity.
"Sold out" is meaningless. DELAHOYA-PACQUIAO DID NOT SELL OUT.
Delahoya-Pacquiao: 14,468
Mayweather-Marquez: 13,116
In that context, it looks different - doesn't it? May/Marq sold 3,000 more tickets than Cotto-Marg (La Battalla attendance was 10,044).
I'm sure that FMJ and GBP would have liked for the fight to sell out. That would have been sweet. But to everybody involved, the PPV sales are far - FAR - more important.Comment

Yesterday, the haters on this site were giving Marquez the credit for selling nearly 1 million PPV. Today you are blaming Mayweather because the live ticket sales were 12,000, 3,000 short of a sellout. So, Marquez gets the credit for the success and Mayweather gets the blame for the failure? And you guys wonder why you are not allowed to handle sharp objects!!!!Comment
