Comments Thread For: Regis Prograis On Teofimo Lopez: "I Really Think He Needs To Get Rid Of His Daddy"

The hype surrounding Teofimo Lopez traveled the globe and reached unrecognizable highs. With the 25-year-old scoring a massive upset over Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020, he laced his waist with the IBF, WBO, WBA, WBC "Franchise", and Ring Magazine lightweight titles.

Many have this opinion about Teofimo & his dad but will they make the necessary changes? It remains to be seen.

Once he takes some bad losses (KO potentially against someone like Prograis) then the blame game will fly around and he'll try and change up his team. It'll probably be too late by that point; no opponent will respect him and he'll be mentally beat before th bell rings.

If he didn’t leave his father after all the shiet they’ve been thru, doubt he’ll ever leave him.

If I’m wrong and he does leave him, I’ve always thought Teo’s firepower and Freddie Roach is a match made in boxing heaven.

I wouldn't suggest for him to leave his father, but to bring in a co-trainer with a different perspective. His father is his rock, his foundation, so to leave him would damage his already fragile mental state. A co-trainer could work with his father to bring out the natural talent that has yet to mature.

They did have Joey Gamache in his corner for a few fights but I didn't see Joey in this or Teo's last fight unless I completely glossed over him.

Well they really need someone knowledgable soon, because his father yelling random nonsense in the corner has him regressing.

I was thinking something along those lines. While I think it would be good for Teo to stand on his own two feet and be his own man, if he fired his father that could cause a rift between them and add more problems on top of whatever is going on with his wife and kid. Not good for his state of mind.

Ideally his father should voluntarily take a step back and just be there as a father to support him.

I disagree. This is all on Lopez. He is the one doing the fighting not his father. Teo needs to want this for himself.

No one can ever fix a broken fighter and give him that extra hunger, drive and determination except for himself and it doesn't matter who trains him. He has to have the desire to want to stay focused, disciplined and humble on his own.

It's just like that old saying goes: "One can take a horse to the water but you cannot make him drink".
