Not likely. No sense taking a risk like that. Besides, Buatsi would be a perfect opponent for Bivol while Bivol waits for the Beterbiev showdown to be finalized.

What risk? Buatsi is just meh!

That said and a side this is a big problem today this whole ''no point in taking a risk'' sort of thing like what good is it fighting bums and taking on tune ups that are just going to get bombed clean out in showcase fights. How is that going to prepare you for a Beterbiev, a Yarde, a Bivol?

This is exactly why Yarde lost when he stepped up because of this whole no point in taking a risk stuff.

We can't have the best fighting the best, now there is no sense in contenders/the next best/second tier guys going at it?
No wonder the sport is in the dumps

It's not like Smith is an unproven up and comer. He can stay busy against a decent opponent. But boxing is a business, and not smart business to risk a huge payday and shot at the undisputed title against the Bivol-Beterbiev winner for a mid level payday versus a dangerous puncher like Buatsi. I agree with you that young fighters on the way up are shortchanged by their management padding their records, obtaining a high alphabet ranking and then fighting for a belt against an elite level fighter without ever having been tested.

Can't see it being Buatsi as surely he'll be in line for a title shot after Smith anyway

I'm a fan , none of these guys is cutting me a check so I give less than a **** about the business end of it though I see your point. The business of boxing has the sport of boxing on life support. I want to see the fight.
