"I'm a big Roy Jones fan and to be honest, he's the only guy in the world that I really don't want to fight. He seems to be the perfect fighter and you just can't hit the guy. Look at what Jones did to Richard Hall who then fights Dariuz Michaelczweski and bashes him up for 11 rounds. I like to watch Jones fight and see his moves. He carries an aura that he takes into the ring with him. It's 100 percent confidence and he knows he's going to win."
-Joe Calzaghe (June 2003)
I've seen that before. "Doesn't want to" and "won't" are two different things though. I am sure they would have fought if the opportunity had arisen.
2000:
And there is still talk of matching Calzaghe with American superstar Roy Jones.
People would see how great a fighter I am when I beat Roy Jones. Jones, the undisputed light-heavyweight king was recently nominated as Fighter of the Decade.
Calzaghe is confident he could beat him, however.
"The Jones fight is a big fight, but that can wait for the time being," he said.
"We've got to make sure the money and the platform are right for that fight.
"But that would be the ultimate fight for me, because people would see how great a fighter I am when I beat Roy Jones," Calzaghe said.
2000:
Wales' WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has thrown down the gauntlet to Roy Jones Jr.
Few would care to cross Jones, the undisputed light-heavyweight king and a man recently nominated as Fighter of the Decade.
Yet Calzaghe is unworried: "I have no fear whatsoever of Jones... I would jump on the next plane to the States and defend my title against him in his own backyard if the opportunity arose," he said.
Calzaghe's comments came after Jones hinted he may step down a weight for his next fight, following a disappointing display against Eric Harding.
Jones' eleventh-round victory in that fight took his record to 43-1, including 35 knock-outs.
Many experts still regard Jones as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but Calzaghe may sense that he has the chance of a victory that would put his name on the lips of the boxing world.
Fighting talk
The undefeated Calzaghe was certainly talking the language that fight promoters like to hear:
"I am the best super-middleweight in the world and I am out to prove that I am the best fighter on the planet. If Jones disagrees, lets get it on," he said.
"Jones is supposed to be the best fighter in the world at the moment. A showdown between us has got to happen to prove who is the best."
"The Sheika fight was the turning point for me," said Calzaghe.
"He was a dangerous fighter and he brought out the best in me. I believe against Jones, who is leagues above Sheika, you will see the best of Joe Calzaghe."
Frank Warren, Calzaghe's promoter, is trying to finalise a deal with Jones' promoter Murad Muhammed and is talking to the WBO to make the fight happen.
"Roy says he has difficulty in finding opponents but he has Joe Calzaghe - the best fighter in the division - waiting to fight him and ready to put his title on the line.
"I am close to making the fight happen and when it does we will see who is the best in the world," said Warren.
So in 2000 he wanted Jones.... but in 2003...he didnt really want to fight him because of how good he was.
oooooooooooook
You're taking the words and taking them 100% literally. "Didn't want to" doesn't mean "won't if the opportunity arose". Sometimes we don't want to do things because it will prove to be a hard task, but if you're driven, you'll do it because you have to. I think that's how it would have been. Joe knows that Jones is not an easy fight but he'd still jump on a plane and fight if he had a chance. He wasn't given a chance at that stage, so we'll never know his true feelings on it.

I'm not a moron, I can read exactly what he is saying. I am taking nothing out of context.
He said specificially... How good Roy was, how amazing he was, how you cant hit him, how he's 100% confident... how he's a fan himself... and its the one fighter he wouldnt really want to fight.
That right there says.... I'm not better then him.... but sure, if you pay me millions... sure ill fight him.
Which means nothing... Id fight prime Jones for millions myself.
My point was to counter Ch@mp's that Jones said he didn't want to fight Calzaghe. I sometimes see moronic fans who say that Calzaghe would've easily school him, and that the quote I used, and the parts I didn't use, showed that Calzaghe did share the same opinion.
I basically brought it up to make his moot, and wasn't intended to offend or slag off Calzaghe.
And I believe that Jones wasn't scared of Calzaghe and vice versa.

Reed, go ahead and build it up into what you want it to be. If it makes you happy, that's fine.
Nah, don't play me for a fool.. with that whatever makes you feel better bull****...
Anyone who can read, comprehend, and understand.. what someone is saying... can understand that Joe thought he wasn't better than Roy, didnt really think he would win... hence the "I really wouldnt want to fight him"... "Unless it was for the crown ***els" line.
After what Bernard and his buddy Shane pulled this weekend, I wouldn't mind seeing Roy and Floyd on a double header vs Shane and Hopkins. My prediction, Roy and Floyd clean house.
This would be an amazing fight card. This is exactly what boxing needs. I bet you a fight card like this would pull in some big bucks. My prediction, Hopkins and Mosley clean house.
