That was GGG’s only goal after the second fight. Take no risks until that retirement check came in.
He followed Canelo to DAZN after Oscar De La Hoya promised he could get Canelo to do a third fight.
Canelo had no obligation to and had no intention of giving him another payday.
So he stole money from DAZN taking easy fights after he should have lost a decision to Derevchenko.
Finally DAZN overpaid for the fight and he got his retirement check.
Oracle01 Oracle01 Verus Verus like this.

In context, Golovkin was a 160lb middle weight his entire career and fought everyone at 160lbs. Andre Ward attempted to get Golovkin to come up to 168lbs because Ward wanted to get paid GGG/Canelo money. By then, Gennady Golovkin was already selling out the Garden and had a contract with David Lemieux. Lemiex lead to fights with Danny Jacobs and Canelo and to significantly more big money paydays. When Ward attempted to lure Golovkin into the ring it wasn't about beating a middle weight, it was about keeping his name relevant, stealing thunder, and getting the money he thought should have been his. Andre Ward didn't make big money until 1- 1/2 years later when he fought Kovelev in late 2016.

Today Andre Ward makes good money as an analyst but as a fighter he didn't, and to this day he resents both Canelo and Golovkin for making the money he thought he deserved, simple as that..

I have always defended Andre Ward but for him to dig up ancient history today just makes Ward sound like an entitled Karen crying about what he didn't get.

Correct. He was in the B side trying to dictate terms to 100% his favor.

if he wanted the fight, he should've taken 50/50.

He was offered 50/50 TWICE. He ducked GGG both times.

once at 164. in between them.

another time at full 168. He walked again.

this coward still has the balls to talk about GGG after retirement. JFL

            Ward went 1-1 with Kovalev

his best win(his own words). Kovalev, who was nothing special in retrospect. Got easily KOed by Canelo and some bum named Eleider.

            Calzaghe beat Hopkins and RJJ

“Rough and Rugged” and “Fierce Style” are not things I would use to describe Andre Ward.

I agree with Ward but heck, I was saying it forever. Let's put everything in perspective really. GGG never really "broke" out and became a star until he was already like 32-33 years old. That wasn't even yet when he encountered Canelo. He got off to a late start unfortunately in regards to making a name for himself and this isn't heavyweight boxing.

Had he had a Canelo type opponent when he was perhaps 28 years old, he would of been able to accomplish so much more over the years including a better trilogy against Canelo. Though cmon, at 40 years old, I'm not sure who the hell actually thought he had a chance when he had already looked worse in the rematch fight and he was younger then. I gave GGG pretty much no chance in the 3rd fight and nothing surprised me. He did look like he came for that one massive retirement check because who the hell else could he fight at 40yrs old that'll get him an 8 figure paycheck?

Classic Andre Ward talking nonsense. He was an elite fighter but as a boxing analyst, he doesn't get his act together and like Bradley, he always seems to be biased, following a script and an agenda.

What happened with GGG is that he tried to pace himself knowing that he could easily gas out after five rounds and that Canelo himself has a leaking gas tank but it was a little too late for the elderly.

He needs to respect GGG work ethic and career.

                      Boxing was cooler in 2015.
