Comments Thread For: Golovkin: If Canelo Thought It's Personal, 3rd Fight Should've Happened Immediately

LAS VEGAS - Gennadiy Golovkin doesn't pay much attention to "the nonsense" he claims Canelo Alvarez says. Alvarez's assertion that their third fight is very personal to him is a perfect case in point, according to Golovkin. If Alvarez wanted to fight him prior to Saturday night, Golovkin contended that the Mexican superstar had all the leverage and

He's right, but Canelo really needed to make sure this time he beats GGG convincingly and 40 is the age when he can do it while still pretending that this is a competitive fight that generates $$$. This tactics shows Canelo's true confidence and character much better than the one he shows in the ring fighting weaker opponents or elite/dangerous opponents past their prime. He was timid and shy like a ****** on a date with Bivol, I guess he'll wait him out too?.. GGG won't win this fight and so be it, at least he'll earn a ton of money and good for him in the sport that has done him dirty so unreservedly.

Crazy that DAZN made deals with both in 2019 but the fight is only happening now. You'd have thought that would have been one of the first things they pushed for to get their moneys worth.

They wanted it, but Canelo didn’t. He sued both Golden Boy and DAZN to get out of it and go his own way. Hearn lured him back after he broke ties with De le Hoya and now here we are finally.
Better late than never, I guess….

“If he wanted this fight back then, if he thought it’s personal, that fight should’ve happened immediately,”

Let's think about the flawed logic here. These are professional boxers, meaning boxing is their business -- how they make their living. These are not school kids settling a dispute with their fists in the schoolyard. What is the worse thing that Canelo can do to Golovkin, fight with him and punch him in the face a few times or deprive Golovkin of multi-millions of dollars? The latter of course. This is what he has done for years until DAZN held out for linking a fight with Golovkin as a precondition of fighting any other DAZN fighter. It was a smart move on the part of Hearn and DAZN. Canelo and his team got outmaneuvered on this one.

Think about it. You have a choice of fighting someone you hate or humiliating them, by keeping them from earning millions of dollars. Hit him where it really hurts, right?

It was even more personal back then, but to dangerous for Canelo to go through with the deal.
He had just gone through two life, and death battles with GGG getting away with a controversial win in the 2nd fight.
He new that GGG would be coming at him with more incentive than ever, so he opted out of World War III.
Then DAZN caved in, and allowed him out of the original contract, when Canelo sued them to court.
An employer never lets an employee dictate to them who they'll fight, or how much to pay them, they negotiate when it's possible.
Four years ago their 3rd fight would've made a lot more money for everyone involved, because the controversial decision was still fresh in everyone's mind.
Bivol came into their fight with a sound mind, body, chin, and strategy which left Canelo outgunned, confused, and at times lost in the middle of the ring.
GGG is no boxing master like Bivol, but hopefully he gave him enough of a blueprint for him to employ, and defeat Canelo.
Here's hoping that GGG knock's the crown off the would king of boxing with a couple of knuckle sandwiches.

It's disgraceful that DAZN cowed down to Canelo's demand's!

Everyone on here getting all worked up.... Lol, if I remember correctly, a year after the second fight, the fight was offered and explored, only to be shot down by GGG because he wanted a huge purse. It's funny how things work out, GGG wasted all that time because rather fighting anyone of note, he decided to just let DAZN pay out that contract they overpaid him until it ran out, now that's there's no big money fights out there for him, he finally decided to take whatever they were offering him. Oh yeah, and I forgot, not to mention that GGG refused to move up in weight, which is not a crazy demand considering he has drained himself to fight at 160 all his career.....

But, a wise man once said, "It is a fool that looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart". Fighters are driven on pure emotion, even when boxing is a business. The ultimate payback is not keeping a rich fighter from more money, he is already wealthy; it is staring down at the opponent being counted out or having the ref step in and wave it off. Neither Canelo nor GGG would be happier with more money - or depriving the other of more than they already have, which is their multi-millions - over the ultimate satisfaction of knowing they were finally able to knock out the other guy after over a half-decade of the hate-filled rivalry. Hitting a fighter where it really hurts is in the head and producing a rivalry-ending KO. The only thing that rules over wanting or not wanting to fight an opponent - is the contract.

If anything it should be personal for GGG. Timeline of events:
                    1. Canelo drops the WBC middleweight title to duck GGG's mandatory challenge
                    2. Over a year later, Canelo finally gets in the ring with GGG. GGG easily wins 8 rounds, Canelo gets a gift draw
                    3. Canelo gets the rematch delayed 6 months because he popped for PEDs. GGG gets stripped of the IBF belt for not fighting a short notice mandatory.
                    4. The rematch happens. GGG wins 7 rounds, Canelo gets a gift win
                    5. Canelo ducks for another four years, then drags 40 year old GGG up a weight class
