I agree. It's that fine line, right? Business decision versus competitive pride. Like you said, he had no precedent of dodging a fight so while it would have been a bad look, his reputation should have allowed him some grace in doing it in the particular moment. Especially if he allows another scenario to play out while doubling back to attempt undisputed.
From a promotional standpoint I would have dropped the belt rather than faced Usyk. He had an out given how many times his fight was pretty much chosen for him.
But I would have thought less of him. He always said he wanted Undisputed. Always seemed ready to fight who he needed to. I'm happier that he was true to that, even if Usyk clearly has his number.
Sometimes pride and ego can get the best of us but I think despite the losses, history will be favorable to AJ because he did what fighters do...fight. I do think the post fight meltdown and rant hurt his image more than the losses to Usyk which I think is a other factor in him being willing to take the Fury fight. He literally has nothing to lose at this pointComment
