    “Fighting Words” – Mayweather-Marquez: A Squash Match and a Post-Fight Angle

by David P. Greisman - Floyd Mayweather Jr. flashed a smile, his top row of ivories glistening in the spotlight. His face, the face that had made the nickname “Pretty Boy Floyd” more than just a nod to the storied killer, was unmarked. His record, now 40 wins in 40 fights, remained unblemished.

And then Shane Mosley crashed the moment, succeeding in taking away Mayweather’s smile, striving to do the same to his face and his record.

Mayweather, his hands still wrapped after 12 rounds with Juan Manuel Marquez, after 290 punches to Marquez’s head and body, waved Mosley toward him, into the camera frame and the post-fight interview. That interview had spent just two minutes on the fight that just ended before turning the conversation to making the next fight begin.

A limp handshake led to a tense confrontation, fingers pointed, voices raised, bodies jostled. There was no need to linger on Mayweather-Marquez. It was a squash match with the sole intention of driving the storyline to the next encounter, the next opponent. Mosley inserted himself, thickening the plot, creating a post-fight angle and turning talk away from Mayweather-Marquez and toward Mayweather-Mosley. [details]

What? Marquez agreed to change the contract and ended up getting gypped of 400K more of what he would have gotten with the original contract? It's like he just got gang-****d.

No. Reread the next sentence. Much of that fine would have gone to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. 50 percent, I believe. So Marquez got 600k instead of 500k.

Unless you know exactly how much of it is going to the Nevada State Athletic Commission then we can discuss it... but that's beside the point anyway. Marquez would have gotten 1M if he didn't agree to renegotiate.

If Floyd would have turned his contract in the the comission for 144 he would have had to pay the $1,000,000 to the Nev Commision. Instead he asked Marquez to agree to 144 to 147. Marquez said he wanted $300,000 for each pound he was over weight. Floyd turned his contract in at 147 to the comission the night before the fight. So floyd saved himself $400,000 by paying marquz instead of the commission

No, Marquez would have gotten 500,000.

Nevada State Athletic Commission rule 467.522.2

            2. A forfeit [of purse] must be divided equally between the other unarmed combatant and the Commission.

So if Mayweather had been fined $1 million, Marquez would've gotten 500,000. Instead, by agreeing to the new terms, he got 600,000.

Nice post, this general idea was pretty obvious from the article as well.

It looked like a wrestling event setting up the next PPV.

Entertaining article, especially with the wrestling angle.

Why doesn't Marquez need to split the 600K with the Commission?
