The Gatti/Ward fights are one of the first things you'd show a new fan. Notice everybody considered Floyd boring? why didnt they love his "artistry"? why were people going crazy over that sloppy Fury/Wilder fight? its almost like people that watch combat sports want to watch balls to the wall wars mostly, but because MMA delivers that more consistently the goalposts shift.
And how is MMA "watered down"? surely its the other way round. Ive never watched an MMA fight and gone "gee, I wish they could ban 75% of the available techniques here so we could see who the best fighter REALLY is"

And again, people shat on him for being boring. Because really all the talk of "artistry" etc doesnt ramp up until a boxing fan sees some crazy UFC stuff on the other channel and wants to justify why they're watching a 30+ minute bloodless, knockdown-less jabfest between two nobodies instead.
Translation: boxing now lets MMA fighters (alongside Youtubers, retired boxers, various celebrities) walk into PPV main events and pays them tons of money for their name value to help prop up casual interest in the sport.
Boxing fans turning into accountants as usual though. Personally as a fan who doesnt see a penny of it I dont see 100m in purses for AJ/Usyk to have a mediocre fight in front of a dead crowd in Saudi Arabia as some great thing tbh.
Body shot KOs, something nowhere near as dramatic as head kicks, flying knee, spinning **** etc etc KOs, and something that also exists in MMA but with kick and knee body shot finishes too

Yes, its a matter of letting. Hence the fact it didnt start happening until Floyd/Conor and then the Paul bros opened the floodgates and made it clear that old washed up MMA fighters and various other none boxers can go to boxing and BKFC to be overpaid.
Achieve "real goals" like fight Jake Paul
Achieve "real fame" by going to a sport with a smaller platform and fewer stars
Meanwhile in the real world GSP, Jones and Anderson were all demonstrably much bigger draws than ATGs like RJJ, Whittaker, Hopkins etc. Khabib is probably more recognizable around the world than Canelo. And in the modern day the UFC clearly has the most stars, the biggest platform and the most exposure.
Decades from now most of the ATG fighters and legendary fights sports talking heads and fans look back on from post-2010 will be from MMA.Comment
