Comments Thread For: Richard Torrez Stops Roberto Zavala Jr. In 58 Seconds In ESPN Opener

TEMECULA, California - Richard Torrez Jr.'s second professional fight went much smoother than his pro debut. The 2021 Olympic silver medalist stopped overmatched Roberto Zavala Jr. just 58 seconds into their six-round heavyweight fight Friday at Pechanga Resort Casino. The left-handed Torrez tattooed the shorter, slower Zavala with several flush punches, which quickly caused referee Eddie Hernandez Sr. to step between them and end their fight.

RTJ is a good fighter but he's too small for HW and I'm not sure he can really get down to CW. If the WBC keeps up with their Bridgerweight, it's something he should pursue to parlay into bigger fights.

Good point, he’s relatively young still so perhaps, as he climbs the heavyweight ladder, he might grow and develop his style into the heavyweight division. He’s an exciting fighter to watch, fan friendly style and character. I was impressed with his performances in the 2020 Olympics.

Early stoppage IMO, but it likely wouldn't have went past a round or two.

He looks totally squashed down, what's his listed height? He is so stocky he is even stockier than Mike Tyson was early in his career. It will be hard for him to make it close to the top as he will spotting tons of height and reach against top heavyweights.

Was there last night and shook his hand after the stoppage and yea,he isn't a very big heavyweight. More of a squat stocky dude. Zavala was grotesquely out of shape and was pretty much a punching bag with two legs so stoppage was fine from what I saw. Met Christy Martin too, cool as hell and looks pretty damn good for her age and being an ex-boxer.

Muratalla is who really impressed me the most last night. Dude was beautiful to watch in there. Those bodyshots he was landing all fight sounded brutal, dont know how his opponent made it to the final bell.

Damn, that's awesome! How is that venue? Was there a decent crowd?

That's good to hear about Christy, she seems to be remaining relevant and a positive influence on the sport from what I've read.

As for Muratalla, I have to agree with you. I was just talking about certain fighters that have a smooth boxing style that is pleasing to the eye. He's one of those guys for me. He changes the speed and power on his shots and he has some fluid combinations.

Venue is pretty badass bro, actually Pechanga Casino in general is really nice. There's only about 6-8 rows of floor seats then they start elevating so there's not really a bad seat in the house. Crowd was crackin man! Bunch of locals on the card so you had everyone rooting getting loud for someone. Nothing like us boxing fans getting loud, talking shiet, fatasses yelling out instructions to the boxers lol! Missed it,was my first card since Covid. Used to go to all the cards out here in SoCal. Planned on going to Ryan's fight tonight but my brother is throwing a bday party for my niece, bastard!

Yea man Muratalla was just floating out there. Reminded me a little bit of Linares. You know who impressed me as well....Christina Poncher lol. Said hi to her as well, she's fine as hell in person!

We are one step closer to a fight being stopped before a punch lands. Just because a ref doesn't think a given fighter can win isnt reason to stop a fight
