He was a punching bag and ended up in the hospital. Come on now.

Joe didn't seem to have ANY complaints about the stoppage. That should tell you everything you need to know. Joe wasn't all there when the fight was stopped. Rolly was out of it too when that fight was stopped.Comment

Agreed. When Smith turned his back and looked confused the ref had to act. Waiting to see what happened next, considering what had just gone before, was not an option.
If joe smith looked capable of landing something big or turning the fight around the ref may have let it go on
But the ref watched joe smith take everything flush beter was throwing he had no defence for anything beter offered
plus he turned his back and had no clue where beter was hence he wasn't defending himself...the ref stopped it at the right timeComment

If the fight was allowed to continue Smith would get brutalized. After the 1st knock down Joe was visibly shaken by Arthur's punching power, not to mention Smith isn't skilled enough to hang with him.Comment

No proof to back that up. Joe was up at something like 4 and on steady legs he was ready to go. This was just like Rolly and Nonito a quick stoppage we need some 90s refs to let the fights continue until a real stoppage is neededComment

Get your point but I disagree. Good stoppage. All that was going to happen was Joe was going to be seriously hurt likely having his career ended.Once again a jumpy ref stops a fight just as it’s getting interesting when Joe Smith wasn’t given a fair chance to prove he could’ve gotten out of the round and possibly launch a comeback. He was a little shaken but it’s not like he was out cold like Manny against roided JMM or falling all over like Berbick the guy was shaken but fighting back. There was no reason to stop the fight that early the ref shouldn’t be near this level again.
Ref allowed him to fight 2-3 more times to earn more money.Comment
