Exactly. Anyone who follows boxing somewhat, knew who Bivol was. And if they didn't , they knew who he was when the fight was announced. All you have to do is Google his name. And with Canelo being the so called " face of boxing" that's what people did . I'm sure many watched Bivol on YouTube if they wanted to see his style. For the average sports fan , they probably just figured another cherry picked , no name opponent in which Canelo was listed as a 5-1 favourite. Even upto the minute of the fight, he was a 5-1 pick. Oscar ? I give him credit. Shrewd promoters have a sneaky way of fooling the public with their champions . They get their fighters to fight opponents that actually sound like big names because of their past or they might hold onto a title to make them look good. Canelo's promotion were/are the king's of this method. Floyd's were another. Crawford another. Ironically, when Oscar fought, he fought anyone , anytime , anywhere. And he has losses because of it. He took lots of risks in the ring. Alot of his fights were 50/50 fights. Now that he's a promoter, he want fighters to commit to him for long term so he can make as much money as possible off them. Ie; low risk / high reward. Also meaning , as he openly admits, there would of been no Bivol fight. And more of Rocky Fielding, Callum Smith, BJ Saunders, Khan etc.

Only really shrewd Boxing fans realised how tough the fight would be or picked Bivol, and it seems there were not many of them. Most people got carried away with the Canelo hype including Canelo. The idea he chose Bivol because he thought he was the toughest option is total bullcrap. He was their softest option in combination with a 40 year old GGG.

I think most knowledgeable fans though Bivol could win, they just didnt think he'd get the decision, which he darn near didnt. Heck, Canelo spent most of the fight doing nothing, and large parts just leaning on the ropes; and he was one round away from a draw.

Its not that people thought less of Bivol, its just that they know how things usually break for Canelo, and how despite what happened in the ring they almost broke against Bivol. Don't forget, Bivol was down 4-0 in a fight he easily won.

That’s why Canelo is the most popular fighter in boxing. And that’s why he has so many fans.

His critics get on him for not looking perfect in every fight but he isn’t scared of anyone. He’s fought a bunch of unknown fighters with different styles. He doesn’t pick fighters based on styles. He picks fights based on what his critics think of them.

Mayweather, Lara, GGG, Jacobs, Bivol…all great fighters, all difficult styles to look great against. His fans don’t care if he loses, fights to a draw, fights a close fight. Doesn’t matter. His fans are his fans because he is a good fighter and isn’t afraid to fight other good fighters or fighters who are considered better than him.

I remember years ago when DLH tried to make Canelo fight Lemiuex, the mediocre fighter that Benavidez just fought. Canelo turned it down because he wanted a tougher challenge. That’s what a great fighter does.
