I'll assume your answer is ''NO''

Unlike Fury, May can box and had the best boxing mind in the game.

        Pac was a phony
        GGG is a phony
Fury is a size bully in a decrepit HW era

Of the 3, Pac holds a slight edge due to his ''humble'' ways

          Fluid without reach advantage.

What were their weights on fight night ?
Cunningham retires Fury if they were the same height.

No one can say May retired due to fear

I'm going to just at Clottey . Might as well mention Golden Johnson
Cotto, while a legit threat, was never on May's level. He was not that hard to hit. I truly don't see any version of him troubling May.
Same with Mosley. Yeah, he's quicker than Cotto but just as ''easy'' to figure out and time. Since May had that brilliant blend of boxing and defense, he would be able to do his thing.
Margarito....Pac fans and May haters favorite boogeyman
One handed Clottey took him to the brink.
Pac and his fear of losing blood ''so close to fight night'' put the fight off.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Paul Williams. The 2nd favorite name tossed around.

IMHO, Paul would have been the tougher of the bunch.

Manny's list of ''top'' fighters @ WW -
              Cotto*
              Clottey
              DLH*
              Algeiri*
              Rios
              Broner
              Lucas
              Mosley
              Vargas
              Ugas
              JMM2x
              Bradley 3x
              HORN
              Thurman

Obviously guys May would not be in a rush to fight
Not sure why you put all this. Your question was
"What threat did May retire to avoid ?
And who were the top guys fighting in his absence ?"

And the answer is they were fighting each other. Of those 6 I listed, in 09 were ranked by Ring 1 thru 6.

Lets start with my boy Cotto.
              - Win/Nov 07, Mosely.
              - Loss/July 08, Marg.
              - Win/June 09, Clottey
              - Loss/Nov 09, Pac
By the time he fought Floyd in May 12, he just beat Marg at 54, Dec 11. Cotto was done.

              Clottey-
              Loss/Dec 06, Marg
              Loss/June 09, Cotto
              Loss/March 10, Pac

              Mosely-
              Loss/Nov 07, Cotto
              Win/Jan 09, Marg.
              Loss/May 10, Floyd
              Loss/May 11, Pac

              Marg-
              Win/Dec 06, Clottey
              (Loss/July 07, PWILL), 08 09 Paul moved up
              Win/July 08, Cotto
              Loss/Jan 09, Mosely
Loss/Nov 10, Manny at a CW favoring Marg.

              Manny-
Win/Nov 09, Cotto at a CW favoring Pac
              Win/Mar 10, Clottey
              Win/Nov 10, Marg
              Win/May 11, Mosely
              (Loss/May 15, Floyd).

                Laughable

Let me start with the most feeble
                CLOTTEY
That's all of my time he deserves

                NEXT

                Margarito...AKA Cpt Caveman
His only moment at the top is tainted AF
King for a day, bum for life.

''For those who want to bet on Pacquiao vs. Margarito, early lines place Pacman as the favorite from anywhere between -400 to -800. Margarito's line is posting at around +500 to +800.''

Pac picked the caveman* for obvious reasons

                NEXT

                Mosley
Fresh off of destroying the man who was supposed to destroy May.
Nothing more satisfying than beating the man who beat the man !
Mosley had his brief moment in rd 2.

Pac and his no blood 30 days before a fight rule !!!!
                We all know why

May was 35, Cotto was 31
Pac put an * on him for a damn good reason. Demanded another * for any rematch.
The Cotto that May beat was not the Cotto Pac wanted any part of.

Cotto and the caveman were part of TR and May was trying to break away from him.
If we go into business for ourselves after leaving a company, how quick are we going to be to give that old company any business ?
May went his way and dominated the sport, laughing at Arum all the way to the bank......TO THIS DAY.

No one was going to beat May.
No one had the skill set or a history of showing said skill set to make a Fantasy Fight loss realistic.
That's why they're called FANTASY fights. A so called fight fan can let their imagination run wild

One handed Clottey almost beat the caveman yet he was going to trouble May ?!?!?!

May was the P4P/PPV King and face of boxing not because he was a charming lovable guy.

Think whatever you want. Those dudes were ranked. You asked who were the top fighters at the time...and who they were fighting.

Floyd retired in Dec 07 after Hatton at 147. And reappeared against LW champ JMM, Sept 09. Why don't you ever post the rest of Floyds WW resume, its bc it's just as bad as Manny's post JMM 4.

Edit. Just wanted to add whatever defense you say about Floyd not fighting during this time. This is the time frame of where Floyd get a lot of his criticism. Floyd let it pass, time will judge it later.

Clottey was a joke and never amounted to anything. Only Pac fans/May haters mention him.

A fight fan can post the resume of any fighter they want.
Pac fans are not known for taking advantage of their rights.

                    Edit -
BTW, No resume is as bad as Pac's WW resume....considering how ''great'' he's supposed to be.

LOL, that's your assumption that Manny is the only fighter I follow. You never brag about moments of Floyds career, like " Stop Crying and Fight"! I followed him during this era, did you? A resume can only tell you so much.
