You want to abstain from all sugars because they are harmful. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate. However, the complex carbohydrates which are starches like corn, potatoes and rice are much healthier for a diabetic. However, Ice cream, cake, soft drinks, cookies and candy are definite no nos for a diabetic because it contains too much sugar.

And rice which has a very high glycemic value can be made less impactful by turning it into a resistant starch by using parboiled rice. The one I love is Uncle Ben's converted rice. Also Basmati rice as well. Potatoes can be high but cooked and cooled ones like in Potato salad have a lower glycemic value. But Bagels are the worse of all so nothing I can do with them as much as I like them so they have been gone from my diet for ages. I went to a buffet in Maui and ate 7 desserts and then walked for 30 minutes afterward and my sugar levels were an amazingly low 126. Without the walk, it would have been probably at a bad 170 or above on my glucose meter.
