Comments Thread For: Bivol: Without Richards, Castillo Bouts - I Wouldn't Have Received Canelo Fight

nothing to do with cherry picking, a lack of resume, a lack of motivation, a lack of game plan. Canelo got beaten by the guy who is naturally better at that weight.
Canelo’s issue is physique. Simply put, in order to make 175 he puts a lot of weight into a frame that shouldn’t be at 175. Whilst that makes him powerful if also reduces his endurance so he can only fight in short bursts and needs to take frequent breaks.
Bivol executed the perfect game plan. Keep Canelo off balance and force him to reach and expend energy then up the pace in the later rounds as he begins to tire. Think Ali Foreman and rope a dope. Bivol literally mimicked that text book fashion at time and sat on the rope letting Canelo swing. Aside from an unlikely knockout there is nothing Canelo can change that will alter this outcome as the primary factor is his physique. He cannot suddenly become athletic and lighter on his feet at the heavier weight and that’s what he’d need to do to be able to land often enough on Bivol to slow him down. Canelo is always going to tire quicker than Bivol. Think Anthony Joshua at heavyweight. These fighters are built for short bursts of power after which they need a break. All Bivol needs to do to win is not give him that break.
Upper body movement and slipping jabs is all very well but he’s not going to slip all of them and that continual evasion round after round against the longer fighter is exhausting. Canelo can perhaps tire a little less by taking some steam off some of his punches but realistically that could prove counter productive as Bivol would have even more left to come back at him in the later rounds.
Rematch will be an even more decisive win if not a knockout for Bivol. His punch variation will be next to impossible to solve by Canelo with a better game plan as he didn’t rely on any one thing in particular to beat him. It’s not like the Mayweather loss where Canelo can adopt some of Bivol’s technique - he doesn’t have the physique and he’s now too old to reinvent himself again.

His #1 spot on the list shows that within the past 3 years he's been fighting better opposition than anyone else in the sport.

He’s saying what most boxing fans already know….Alvarez is not going to fight anyone who poses any kind of real threat to him because of his fan base…they are going to pay to see him fight no matter who he fights and he takes full advantage of that
