What he did wrong was call for them to immediately to stop (twice) as seen here in this slow motion gif I made.
There are three stories going on here.
- As soon as the mouthpiece was out Spence thought he heard Cole say stop when he didn't. He either (1.) knew Cole would say something because he knoew Cole was on his side or (2) was stunned from the punch that knocked the mouthpiece out of his head.
- Within a second or two Cole was calling for a stop. The action was on!
- The ropes clearly held Spence up. I think it's fair and reasonable to say the ropes kept Spence up.

Slowmotion gif above shows he did not wait for a break in the action and he did not follow the rules on knockdowns as seen at the bottom of the page.
Not only did he stymie Ugas, but he was very quick to get the doctor to check his eye. I've never seen a doctor block another fighters eye either. Have you? If yes, which fight or fights?

Where does any rule say a fighter has to leave his feet? This is the literal rule.
