Former heavyweight champ Andy Ruiz has not fought for almost a year, and we all believed that when the first heavyweight ruler of Mexican descent would return, it would be against a big name. Deontay Wilder was mentioned, but Wilder is still to decide if he fights again, Luis Ortiz’s name was mentioned way more than once, and Ruiz reportedly turned down a fight offer to face Dereck Chisora in London because he was going to fight Ortiz instead.

Now it turns out Ruiz is facing another guy altogether – a guy who was an accomplished kickboxer but has faced nothing but limited opposition in the boxing ring. Tyrone Spong (you may recognize the name mostly from the failed drugs test Spong had, this forcing him out of a fight with Oleksandr Usyk back in October of 2019) will face Ruiz in a Mexican bullring on July 16th, the fight to headline a Triller pay-per-view card.

This news is, to put it mildly, disappointing. Ruiz, who reportedly turned down an IBF final eliminator with Filip Hrgovic, will gain almost nothing from this fight.

Ruiz Junior probably did not expect his fight against Arreola to be so difficult.

That is why I think he has chosen this fight. The main thing is that he is keeping active.

Ortiz should just fight, MAKE his own fights. Don't wait for people to call him out.

This.... Manny wouldn't have looked so bad if he took a keep busy fight after the Thurman fight. You have to stay active at late age or risk getting old during fight night and getting destroyed.

Ruiz vs ortiz would've been a nice match but ortiz shouldn't be acting like there no other opponents om the table so now he wants to sit wait for ruiz not smart from him he aint getting any younger at 43

Ortiz vs Areolla makes sense and we would all tune in to watch so why not do that? One thing I can guarentee in that one is both guys are going to throw and land big punches so we will see if ol' shaky legs can blast cristobal out before cristobal blasts him out.

Ortiz team are absoloute muppets who seem to enjoy this myth that he is a Boogeyman and so keep him away from anyone dangerous (except Deontay)

This guy has had 2x title shots, was offered a different title shot vs AJ and offered a final eliminator vs hrgovic.

His best win is Bryant Jennings btw this guy has no right to talk like he's been hard done by, he's been given more opportunities than his achievements merit.

Ortiz is a lose-lose situation.

He's popped for PEDs before and is always a risk of doing it again.

If you fight him and beat him, nobody will give you credit because he's fat and old.

If you fight him and lose, again, you just lost to a fat old man.

He doesn't speak English, he's Cuban and not Mexican or Puerto Rican so he can't tap into a preexisting nationwide fanbase, he's low reward, and on top of that he's a tricky southpaw with great technical skill and one punch KO power.

Take short money to fight a fat old man that might pop for PEDs, might knock your head into the fifth row, might outbox you and make you look like a clown, and won't do much for your career even if you beat him? Not hard to see why he can't get fights.

Not to mention I believe he'd beat Ruiz. Bad style match up for him. Should have jumped for the AJ fight when he had the chance.
