  • Comments Thread For: Kenny Porter Continues To Groom Rising Talents For The Fight Game

It's not the Mandalay Bay, STAPLES Center, Barclays Center or any other huge venue Kenny Porter has worked as the coach for his son Shawn. But it's boxing, he has a chance for his fighters to get work and better themselves, and that love is still there, even if it's in a strip mall in Atlanta.

My advice for Mikhail and Hendri is to not lose otherwise Kenny will throw you under the bus.

Train with Porter Sr. your whole life, get into the biggest legacy fight of your career, then have that ******* throw in the towel just to spite you for embarrassing him and bruising his monster ego. Screw that. Young prospects, go find a better trainer.

Shawn made Kenny. Kenny hasn’t really accomplished sh** as a trainer, he just rode the coattails of his far more talented son.

Good article with several unexpected, interesting stories. But, man, y'all hatin' on Kenny! Shawn was raised right. He's a successful as commentator as well a boxer. I didn't like that Kenny threw in the towel vs. Crawford, or seemingly threw him under the bus directly afterwards, but that's their relationship. As KP talks about, boxers need to be disciplined - with their physical lives on the line every fight. And he provides discipline and love, the way it should be. The world needs more men of faith like that.

Not even being a d$#%, but even with Shawn, I've never seen anything a as trainer that shows he can develop fighters. Shawn fought the same way his whole career. He was just strong as hell and talented enough to make that rough ish work. Guess time will tell.

Kenny Porter deserves credit for being a responsible father who pushed his son to achieve, but he’s also clearly an egomaniac who cannot accept his support role in their relationship. Shawn Porter has a sunny, humble disposition (maybe he got that from mama), and that is probably the only reason he didn’t turn out to be an arrogant prick like Teo Lopez, because his dad, in his own way, is just as arrogant and insufferable as Teo Sr. Shawn loves and lives to please his father so he sees past the man’s flaws, which is great for the both of them.

I can see your perspective. I don't think Kenny is as bad as you make him out to be (far from Teo Sr - or Angel Garcia - for instance), but yeah, he can put himself at the center more than he should. You don't have to like a person's personality or agree with their tactics to respect what they're about and what they've accomplished.
