As GGG got older I think he wanted to make some adjustments. Sanchez trained him to be the aggressor and finish his opponents. As he got older, it was taking more wear and tear on his body. Remember, he's late 30's when he parts ways with Sanchez. After 350 amateur fights and 40+ pro fights it takes a toll on your body. The two Canelo fights and his fight with Jacobs were close and he took his share of punches. I do think it's a bit late in his career to try and box more, because it was his aggression and punching power that made him so successful. That's what fans want to see. I think the Murata fight will answer a lot of questions. How much he has left, and whether or not he's still a top 3 elite at 160. He's 40 now, so it's not as though he's going to get better with age. A third Canelo fight will put him at a severe disadvantage now, it should have happened 3 years ago.

We know that GGG split from Sanchez. We know that GGG looked shlt against Deravyanchenko. Sanchez, being naturally biased towards himself, therefore concludes the first statement is the cause of the second.

The trouble with this is GGG's age. GGG fought Canelo when he was 36. There is no reason to believe GGG's abilities would have diminished any less in his late thirties under Sanchez.

That said, there certainly seemed to be something wrong on top of that in the Deravyanchenko fight. It's been suggested he was sick coming into that fight, and it looked like it had to be something like that. Mild virus plus age-diminished ability = seriously below par.

I don't think GGG has much chance in a third fight against Canelo, but the man still knows how to box and can still punch.

Yeah, but I think it was also a question of styles. GGG has tendency to cover himself up and wait until the opponent ends his attack. That makes him vulnerable to combinations. Weakness more emphasized with the age. Derevyanchenko overwhelmed him at points. Close fight.

The fight with Derevyanchenko was where Golovkin really struggled, and was fortunate to get that decision.

Maybe he could beat Murata and give one more big performance against Canelo, after which that might be it for Golovkin. He has no interest in fighting Charlo or other middleweight champions or a big name super middle in Benavidez.
I'll be curious to see the odds vs Murata. GGG will most likely win but I wouldn't be surprised if Murata lands his fair share of hard shots on GGG.

Indeed, GGG has never showed an inclination to counter mid-combination. GGG has always been "Dish yours then I'll dish mine!"

G's style worked for him throughout most of his career so it's apparent that trying to switch it up isn't helping. He should revert back to his old style. Yes, he was susceptible to getting caught in the fire, but at the same time, that style would also get the respect of his competition. He can crack, but trying to box makes his opponent's more comfortable in pressing Golovkin instead of the opposite.

Sanchez brings very little but when Golovkin was younger he needed very little.

I’ve been a GGG fan for a long time, but I thought the way he dumped Sanchez was shabby. You just don’t do that to an old friend. And Sanchez is saying exactly what I’ve been saying: The new style doesn’t suit Golovkin. He’s way too hesitant to throw a punch, and you can’t win in the fight game that way.

I don’t expect a lot of problems in Japan for GGG. But if he gets another bout with Canelo, you can be fairly certain he will lose. He’s no longer programmed to force his opponent onto the ropes where he pounds them into submission. And that’s the only way he’d have a ghost of a chance against Canelo.

Who is Sanchez training now? There's a reason why his fighters started losing (and badly at times I might add) and left him for someone else. He wasn't teaching Golovkin anything new, just power, power, power. And that started to show as the years went on. "We don't adapt to fighters, they adapt to us." That sort of mentality meant that there wasn't really a strategy going in, just hoping that Golovkin will eventually break them. And Sanchez has a huge part of why Golovkin started to look like **** at the weigh-ins the last couple years. The worst G had ever looked was in the leadup to the first Canelo fight, looking heavy and flabby, especially at the open workout in August. They came in totally unprepared. I could keep going on but it's for the best that Golovkin left. I'm sure if he stayed with Sanchez, we'd see him deteriorate even faster. Aside from the Derev fight, I think Golovkin has looked fine and should look good these next couple fights, more so at 168.
