  • Canelo really shouldn't be fighting at 175 lbs

Bivol is supposed to be on the smaller side for a light heavyweight. Yet in the faceoffs for promoting this fight you can tell he is significantly bigger than Alvarez.

Yet Canelo is going for it anyway. A tip of the hat to him for challenging himself and chasing legacy.

More boxers need to start taking risky fights. Within their own weight class at the very least.

    Why?

When Canelo Alvarez was fighting at welterweight, on the night of the fight he was weighing in at close to or over 160 pounds 'Or maybe more, I am sure somebody here knows the exact weights'.

Canelo Alvarez if you are really honest with yourself, is really and has always been a middle-weight fighter.

At the beginning of his career, he was weight draining himself to be the big man. Alvarez felt that he needed to be the big man, in order to beat certain fighters.

This kind of back fired against Floyd Mayweather Junior, as you all know.

Listen guys, I am going to keep bringing this point up. Day before weigh in's create a illusion in boxing, Alvarez right now at 175 pounds 'In my opinion is fighting in and around his natural weight class'.

If the same day weigh in rule was re-introduced, Alvarez would continually be fighting at 168-175 pounds.

Bivol towers over him. It's easy to tell that these two belong in different weight classes.

A good big man almost always beats a good little man. Let's see if that holds true again, but respect to Canelo for pushing his limits.

What does Canelo Alvarez weigh on fight night?

A lot if fighters towered over Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier and many more fighters.

Size is not just a measurement of height.

Alvarez has always been a middle-weight to light heavyweight. It is just that due to the day before weigh in rule? Fighters can opportunistically weight drain themselves to be the big man.

Is Canelo Alvarez a welterweight in your opinion ?

I understand what you are trying to imply with a thread like this. But I just think it is a tad dramatic. It is dramatic because, Alvarez is and has always been a middle-weight etc

When Alvarez fights at middle-weight to light heavyweight, he is basically fighting guys in and around his natural weight class.

There is definitely a size advantage here.

Bivol probably weighs between to 185-190 in the ring. He's a natural LHW.

Canelo is probably a natural MW/SMW.

It's great to see him taking risks against clearly bigger fighters.

So this brings me back to a issue, I have been continually bringing up of late.

The day before weigh in needs to go. It creates a illusion, it also negatively impacts the competition.

All because we have a mass of fighters, all trying to exploit the rule. And be the big man.

There is not a year which goes back, were a fighter uses making the weight as a excuse.

All of this will be fought back, if the same day weigh in rule was re-introduced. Because it will deter fighters from weight draining themselves, and they will be forced to fight in and around their natural weight. This will also improve their training and well being.

I actually think fighters in the lower weight classes, will improve their overall conditioning.

Note: I don't know what Bivol weigh's on fight night. Maybe he is a tad heavier than Alvarez, but I would not imagine him to be 15-20 pounds heavier.

If Canelo is really great, then a great little man beats a good big man.

I like that he's fighting Bivol, but do we really know if Bivol is great at this point or just pretty good? Plus Bivol has more of that style that fits Canelo moreso than the Andrade/Charlo/Lara

Plus Nelo is fighting unbeaten guys. Rather than guys with good resumes who have lost a lot already.

His body is more than capable at 175. I think he just makes a greater effort to manage his weight throughout the year, especially after the CLEN suspension which was what he was using to help cut the weight for fights. He's taken a more disciplined approach to his overall weight and fitness. Bivol is taller but Canelo has dense muscle and a thick neck, shoulders and thighs. It won't be long before Canelo may have trouble getting to 168 and has outgrown that division entirely.
