  • Comments Thread For: Kovalev Aiming for Cruiserweight Title Shot After Three or Four Fights, Then Retirement

Sergey Kovalev wants to end his career with one last piece of hardware. The former longtime light heavyweight titleholder from Russia is hoping to become a two-division titlist by winning a belt in the cruiserweight ranks, according to his manager Egis Klimas. Kovalev, a force in the light heavyweight class for the first half of the 2010s, has seen his career plunge dramatically ever since his 11th-round knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez in November of 2019, which was the last time Kovalev fought.

I'm not sure if I would try 3 or 4 more fights before trying to get a title shot that would put him in title contention in 2025 more than likely and he ain't getting any younger

Even at this stage of deterioration, I'd pick Kovalev to defeat Makabu. At least, the Makabu I saw in the Mchunu rematch.

Then again, a title shot after too many vodka shots is a big ask.

The cruiser title holders will take a kovalev fight just for his scalp. He isn't beating any of them at this stage

Unfortunately for Kova, there is a huge jump between 175 and 200. I don't think in his old age he could do it successfully, but don't count him out completely.

I think he stands a chance against Makabu but Don King cant afford that fight
