But yeah sure, I am the one downplaying Canelo now. It wasn’t Canelo’s critics.
The writing was on the wall with the Kell Brook fight though. Kell Brook, a literal welterweight, did fairly well vs GGG. He was pegged to go maybe 3 rounds. GGG understandably opened up with an enormous -800 odds to beat Brook. Nobody envisioned a welterweight putting up a good fight vs GGG, let alone get stopped while still on his feet and egging GGG on to keep coming at the time his corner threw in the towel.
Jacobs further showed GGG was really not as good as Hagler, Monzon, Hopkins, or Jones like his fans were proclaiming. A lot of fans and ringside reporters had Jacobs edging GGG.
Still, the Brook and Jacobs fights were still not enough for Canelo critics to give him a chance vs GGG, as they predicted he would be stopped within 6 rounds. But again, another former welterweight, who had a fraction of the amateur experience as GGG, and had only 1 fight at 160 (164lbs vs Chavez Jr), managed to match GGG to a draw.
Ever since that night, you guys have not been able to admit that Canelo was way better than you predicted and in reality, he was just as good as GGG in the 24 rounds they fought. It’s so hard for you guys to admit that Canelo matched everything GGG brought. Call it robberies all you want, decades from now fans will watch the 24 rounds in awe of how well matched they were.

Shouldn't he have had the keys to open Canelo up in round 1 of the first fight? That's what video study is for. And certainly, for round 1 of the second fight...
But WWE doesn't always follow logic.

The first odds numbers for GGG vs Canelo had GGG as a massive -350 favorite. Everyone was predicting a TKO by GGG.

2012-2014 I'll give it to you as GGG splashed on the scene to close out his physical prime and most every fight fan, myself included thought Canelo would be in over his head against GGG at 160. But ANYONE who has watched the sport would readily agree that Canelo was the most improved fighter from 2010-2020. The growth was incredible and he built himself in the pro ranks (like most Mexicans), not the amateurs (like most Europeans) and potentially with the help of PED's. Most observers saw this and the numbers above don't lie. It was a razor close fight coming in. You're pointing the finger at a few zealots.
I completely agree with you, the Kell Brook fight showed that GGG was slowing down and starting to become a concentrated version of himself. Kell Brook was a fantastic boxer and for him to have had some success against GGG should not be counted as a detriment. He went back down two weight classes and had just as much success with Spence.

Brook, Jacobs and Canelo fought GGG at the height of his hype.
It is not Canelo’s fault that GGG pulled a Calzaghe and started making better career moves in his 30s.
When GGG came to the scene, he was being ducked by Sturm, Martinez, Quillin. Not Canelo. Canelo was not a player at 160 in 2012-2014, so yeah he would been in over his head if he fought the best MW in the world while coming off fights vs Trout, Mayweather, Lara, Angulo, Kirkland, Khan. Smith, and Cotto at 152-155lbs.
After he fought Chavez Jr at 164 was when he was fair game to fight GGG and he did just that.
Regardless, the point is GGG fans thought Canelo was going to get stopped. They didn’t give him much of a chance. Predictions for GGG-Canelo I were about as wild as DSG-Mattysse. And fast forward, no one gives Canelo any credit for doing better than his critics predicted.
Yes, any fan should have seen that Canelo is the most improved fighter. But that is not the case still. He is still spoken of as he is some bum.

The 2nd half of the rematch should have shown people that Golovkin could not only withstand the best onslaught that Canelo could offer, but that he could adjust and give Canelo all that he could handle. There's a reason why Canelo didn't want to immediately run it back again, like Gatti and Ward. It's unfortunate we never got to see them both closer to their prime, but we can thank Alvarez and his team for that.Elastic Recoilz likes this.

Stylistically they are good dance partners , that being said I think GGG Is a flat track bully, he spars cruiserweights So instead of sitting at MW all this time he should have gone to SMW or LHW I guess he wants a last big pay day don't blame him for that

Deep down, I still want to see it though. If I tuned in to Khan/Brook this past weekend, then I'll surely tune into the trilogy.
GGG had 2 clear wins on Clenclen. Clen is a cheating cvnt who had to cheat because he got scared. History will remember that, Mexico will remember that!Elastic Recoilz likes this.
