In fairness, those were all long time ago, and G is on different level than anyone he's fought since. Canelo has evolved a ton since Lara/Mayweather. He's not the same fighter anymore, not even in the same stratosphere. He kept the reflexes, but grew into his wide frame.

It's just funny how quick he and team were to try and make fights with Callum, Saunders and Plant. How quickly the Makabu idea came together. Meanwhile bivol, benavidez or beterbiev are willing to take the fights. Not ask for too much and Canelo will still be paid incredibly.

My personal opinion is, like any other person doing a job, he's supposed get better, or more efficient. He has done that, but, he hasn't fought anyone of Lara, ggg and Mayweather. The trio he fought, Saunders, smith and plant, weren't in the same tier as the ones I mentioned above. Even when he fought cotto, on his way out, it was a close fight too, but you know what? That's exactly what is supposed to happen. Close fights between fighters from the same tier. Be safe

I think he is the same fighter but just fighting weaker opponents. He looked pretty ordinary for most of the Plant fight, missing so much and just chasing him around throwing hay makers. That is why they cherry pick to build the myth Canelo is much better. He had 43 pro fights when he fought Floyd, no fighter in history has suddenly improved greatly at that point. He was a seasoned pro already, yet the fan boys kept acting like he was a rookie or something lol.
