Coppinger: Canelo Turns Down PBC Offer…Duck

According to Mike Coppinger, Canelo had declined over 100M to face Charlo and then Benavidez. He’s taking less money with DAZN (rumoured to be 85M) for the Bivol and shot GGG fights.

let’s be honest here. Reynoso screaming about Benavidez and his comments regarding him, reminded me of Mickey screaming about Clubber Lang in Rocky 3. Reynoso is smart and a damn good trainer/manager, he’s protecting Canelo from Benavidez. Win or lose Benavidez will put Canelo through things in the ring he’s never faced. It would be a war. Canelo could not play his finesse games and pick his spots. Benavidez is a terminator. That’s why Floyd, Bradley and most boxers feel Benavidez is Canelo’s toughest fight. He’s not the flashiest or most technical but he’s a warrior that doesn’t stop coming.

I like Canelo a lot, but this is a clear duck and a bad look. I don’t think he’s afraid, I think Reynoso is. Bivol is a safe fight, a chess match. Bivol is overrated and looks washed up. GGG is completely shot and you could argue has won 2 of his last 4 fights. Disappointing that Canelo and his team ran away from more money and better exposure.

I don't know. I don't see it as a duck in any way if he's decided to go with the DAZN offer. Had he went with the PBC offer, people would be saying he swerved Bivol.

I don't consider myself either a fan or a hater of Canelo. I think all of the potential fights are good ones for different reasons: Charlo, GGG, Benavidez, Bivol.

Charlo has looked ordinary as of recent but I think he's do well to go up to 168 and he's a proud fighter with a nasty streak. GGG is ancient but there's no evidence his chin is compromised and he would probably die in the ring before submitting to Canelo, it will be violent.

Bivol and Benavidez are at opposite spectrums but still pose challenges to overcome. Beterbiev can look ordinary but I remember Benavidez doing the same against Gavril.

The fact he would make more money and get more exposure with the PBC offer is what makes it seem like a duck. That combined with Reynoso’s comments about Benavidez paint a certain picture.

Charlo would beat the current shot GGG. And Benavidez is a way bigger, way better fight than Bivol on a Mexican holiday.

No surprise he took short money. Benavidez gives him the bidness!

he's ducking 2 guys who have done absolutely nothing over the last 3 or 4 years to fight a 175 champion and a trilogy against the hardest test he's had over the last 5 years of his career. I wish more guys would duck like Canelo does

Benavidez is a two time champion at 168. He’s undefeated. He’s Mexican. He’s exciting. He’s young. You’re talking like the GGG fights were 6 months ago. He is completely shot and has never fought at 168. Would you favour GGG over Benavidez at 168? That’s what I thought. Charlo would beat GGG right now. GGG is done. Look at his last 5 fights.

Maybe Charlo or Benavidez should move up and beat Bivol to prove they're a bigger threat and deserve the fight more?
