Bad looking fight. I see nothing impressive with Magsayo seeing as that Russell kept it competitive with no jabs.

He was a bit more impressive than Russell Jr and that's all that matters.

I believe that a lot of that has to do with his respect for Gary Russell, Jr. After all, Russell is a cagey veteran and the best fighter and the biggest name on Mark Magsayo's resume to date. So you don't want to under estimate him.

So therefore, he was reluctant in taking too many risks by not doing something foolish like running into counter punches that he didn't see or getting himself knockout because at the time he didn't know just how shot Gary Russell was.

He probably thought GRJ fighting with one hand was just a ploy in order to set a trap for him but he refused to bite the bait. Therefore, he fought a mostly tactical and cautious fight by picking and choosing his spots very carefully whenever he decided to engage Russell..

And it nearly cost him the fight.

Magsayo looked good the first two rounds. After that he couldn't adjust and should had pressed harder and earlier since he was fighting a one armed fighter that couldn't even keep his arm up.

I agree. He could have pressed more but personally i didn't think he needed to because of Russell's very low work rate and punch output. Gary only averaged throwing nearly three punches per round. You can't win a fight that way by not throwing punches and letting your hands go even if they don't all land.

No way Gary was gonna win that fight unless they rob Magsayo. Shoulder injury or not, he was getting outlanded consistently.

It's easy to look flashy defensively if you don"t throw punches. Contrary to popular belief, fights don't get scored based on evaded punches. They are scored based on landed punches.

Magsayo always had stamina issued and as the dude said, Gary was the best fighter he ever faced. One handed Gary was still a threat.

He did enough to win. That's what matters.

I don't disagree. I had Magsayo winning and certainly be more of a margin than the judges. All the while, I felt like he was letting some rounds be less decisive than they should have appeared. The judges seemed to give the champ the benefit of the doubt in close rounds and it almost cost Magsayo a win.

GRJ is a crafty fighter, and perhaps Magsayo was leery of that and his own stamina. Either way, I wasn't impressed with the performance against a compromised GRJ. I wish him luck and perhaps he will look more impressive in the next fight.

I think it was Manny Steward (as well as many others) that said "just win this one and look impressive next time."
