I seriously doubt he will make even one successful title defense. There is no way with Gary just having one good arm after the 3rd round that this fight should have gone the distance!
He lacks the killer instinct to be a high level boxer. Any of the other featherweight contenders would have been all over Russell the second he showed pain in that shoulder.

I hope he never becomes champion ever again.
I agree, this is part of the sickness infesting modern boxing - fighters fighting once a year or worse because they get paid enough to do so and are in it 90% for the money and not the glory.

It's getting worse and worse in terms of fighter inactivity. Look at the HW: AJ is at the back end of his career but has only had 26 fights! Fury has had 2 fights in about THREE YEARS.

Even the 'prospects' are getting in on the act, fighting once or twice a year before they're even 25!

Unfortunately this is true. But I find the ignore list works wonders for filtering through the troll talk

          • Stop reviewing a fight backwards, you should not start with round 12 down to round 1 , you should should start with round 1.which is the start of the fight. I have stopped reading as soon as I see that and I go to another boxing site.

            • Gary Russell was the longest champ because he seldoms fight whilst Ancajas and Nietes have defended their belts more than 10 times.

Ha ha. I don't follow him but knew he'd been around a while. But since the first time they said he was the longest running champ (last night), I thought that's such a bogus claim to fame. There's a lot of guys, following the same pattern of once-in-a-blue-moon fights who are trying to break that "record".

                What a joke.

"I refused to put this fight back, and I fought with one arm," Russell said on Showtime afterward. "He had his hands full with a fighter with one arm the whole fight. I gave him a boxing lesson."

This whole "I was injured coming into the fight" routine never gets old. It seems to be a mantra recently.

I have nothing but peace and love for the Russell family and I want them to succeed. Moreover, I like Gary Russell, Jr too. i am a fan of his but his performance tonight; Well it really shocked and disappointed me.

I say that because at least in my judgement he came in very unprepared. I doubt if he did any to very little sparring or training for this fight and it showed.

After all, he manged to average throwing only three punches per round for this fight because he lacked both the stamina and conditioning to throw more. All he did was cut weight and showed up to collect a pay check.

He displayed no sense of urgency none whatsoever. It was almost like he was saying "I don't give a fuck! Just give me my money so I can go home". He didn't come to win.

All he did was kept fighting off the back foot in order to survive and last the distance. One cannot expect to win a fight on the scorecards that way; Especially when you are not throwing any punches.

Also, he came in out of shape too. Did you see his gut hanging over his trunks. That was all water weight. Chances are the man probably rehydrated close to a 150lbs tonight.
I am a huge Russell fan but this post is spot on. I wish he would have told us that he had sooooo many distractions going on before I ran my mouth and talked so much chit about how he was gonna knock Mark out (eating crow as we speak). But this is boxing and the politics won again. The decision was already made that the belt was going to change hands tonight. I fuqs with my man Gary but the WBC needs those sanctioning fees for that featherweight belt at least 3x's a year. Gary is going to be pissed. He's on youtube talking about Al set him up but Haymon will call him to the office and explain that the belt has to be in rotation in order to keep the money train moving. Expect Gary to be fighting in a big match up at 130 later this year. Al is going to take care of it. So yes your fav fighter lost last night so just deal with it. Boxing is corrupt as fuq, but this is the sport we love. I FUQING LOVE BOXING.

                    • I don't believe Russell. Magsayo won 3 of the first 4 rounds when Russell was supposed to be uninjured. Then after his " injury", Russell reeled of the next 3 rounds, and even won several of the later rounds. including the last one.In fact it looked as if Russell won the majority of the last half of the fight.

Just my opinion but it doesn't look kosher to me.
