Comments Thread For: Joe Smith Prioritizes Beterbiev Or Bivol Unification Over Shot At Canelo: 'It's For My Legacy'

Joe Smith Jr. isn't as impressed as some of his peers may be by the potential windfall of a Canelo Alvarez bout. The former day laborer and current WBO light heavyweight beltholder from Long Island, New York was recently asked whom he wants to fight the most and his answer, not surprisingly, was in line with his reputation as a no-nonsense competitor.

Interesting, but I'm sure people would remember you more if you beat Canelo, than winning a unification. Just a thought...

If he beats Canelo, people will remember his name for decades to come. That’s legacy as well.

Joe crazy as hell, he won’t beat either with his straight up stiff style so why not call for Canelo that’s where the money is, Bivol couldn’t sell out a gymnasium where he graduated from! Joe full of s(hit) follow the money! All I’m saying

Beating Canelo does more for his pockets and Legacy than beating either of those two. I'm sure Joe is aware that he has a great hand should Canelo come knocking at 175 as he's the weakest champ there. Could be a case of Joe downplaying the opportunity to inflate the worth of his bargaining chip....

I really like Smith. Big fan of is, but.. how can a guy like him talk about legacy? All these boxers talking about legacy?.. It's prize fighting. Give your all, respect the fans, make your money and get out. Let HOF and the serious fans worry about your legacy.

That's why he ran from the Beterbiev unification fight when it was presented to him last summer.....

Fighters want their names to be known after they're retired or dead. That's why they talk about "legacy" or "making history". It's simple human nature.
