Was Canelo really a "kid" when he faced Floyd?

It doesn’t take a boxing professor to see that Canelo is better now than at 23. That said, Mayweather would still whip him even if he had today’s talents at 23.Comment

Nothing will change the fact that he was 23.
23 is young any way you slice it. It’s young as hell and no boxer is who he is at that age. It’s just too damn young.
You can’t twist the facts and wish Floyd had taken out a prime Canelo at 31.
I really don’t rate fights like this when one opponent is super young, or catchweight fights.
It’s just not as impressive. I can’t lie and say I’m impressed by Pacs win over Cotto at 145 or his win over Margarito at 150. Or Floyd’s win over Canelo at 152.
Image how everyone would feel if Floyd was 23 and fought a 36 year old Canelo? People wouldn’t want to accept it either.

Canelo had almost zero amateur career. He wasn’t your typical professional with 150 or so amateur bouts.
Thats a big factor as well.Comment

If you look at it in a different context, yes he was a kid.
Yes when he fought old Mosley, Cintron and Alfonso Gomez, he was a kid. When he fought Trout and Lara he was a kid.
The reason for this is because he was still in a learning phase. Like most Mexican born fighters, early career pro is their amateurs.
Canelo didn’t step in the ring as a pro, with 100-400 amateur fights. He didn’t really have an extensive amateur career.
Canelo at 23 years old was a “kid” in a sense that a 38 year old, past prime boxer is an “old man”.Last edited by -Kev-; 12-22-2021, 11:40 PM.Comment

You look at Canelo’s two fights vs GGG, no matter how you slice it, Canelo vs GGG fought 24 competitive rounds. GGG had like 400 amateur fights or whatever number, and was seen as an elite Middleweight with threads from his fans claiming GGG was better than Hagler, Hopkins, and Monzon. And predictions for the first Canelo fight ranging from KO in 1 round to KO inside 6. Canelo was the clear underdog in all of his critics eyes, as well as oddsmakers.
They now want to pretend like those predictions never happened after Canelo went 24 competitive rounds with GGG. Canelo proved that he was a whole lot better than his critics thought. It’s pretty much an afterthought now, the predictions that GGG was going to wipe the floor with him and stop him. It’s like it never happened.
Now they feel the need to play revisionist history. They hated Mayweather at the time, more than they hated Canelo. So, at the time, they called Canelo green and Mayweather a cherrypicker. Mayweather is gone now, Canelo is their new target. So now Canelo was experienced enough and old enough to beat the best P4P fighter at 23 years old.
The cycle of senseless hate.Comment

Canelo was a very experienced boxer, lets stop playing these silly games about him being 'too young' when at that point he had more fights than most pros do in their entire careers and almost as many as Floyd himself. Show me a fighter in history that drastically improves after 42 pro fights?
The idea that Canelo is a totally different fighter now is a myth. I think he might be slightly better but basically the same fighter, the only difference is he has not fought anyone even close to Floyd again. Against a nobody like plant, he struggled and often was hitting complete air, so just imagine if he fought Floyd again? Would be the same result.
The excuse he was 'drained' is comical also when he weighed in only 1.5lbs heavier vs Trout 5 months earlier. lol the pathetic excuses.Last edited by Oracle01; 12-22-2021, 11:58 PM.Comment
