Montana Love Scores Three Knockdowns, Wipes Out Carlos Diaz in Three
“2022 is going to be a very big year,” vows Love. This was just a wake-up, we woke the world up this year. Next year, me and Eddie are taking over the 140-pound division.”
Of course, the only question is whether he can make 140 pounds. Love had to revise the fight contract to a 144-pound limit as he miscalculated his weight cut, though insists that it won’t be an issue as he prepares for a title run.
“Absolutely,” promised Love. “It’s just a little hiccup, a learning lesson. We locked in.”
LAS VEGAS – Montana Love put an exclamation point on a year to remember. The unbeaten Cleveland native enjoyed a successful first fight under the Matchroom Boxing banner, stopping Guadalajara’s Carlos Diaz inside of three rounds Saturday evening at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Love scored three knockdowns in round two and had Diaz pinned in a corner, leaving referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop the contest at 0:22 of round three.
This kid is too big for 140! Don't starve for success, just move up and fight Conor Benn!
From a career/promoter perspective, this is a desirable fight for Eddie, but if I were training Benn and focused on his development I'd want Benn up against one of the real contenders in an eliminator as his last fight before a title shot, Avanesyan for preference, or maybe Crowley if he'll travel. Broner would be fine, but I don't think his output is enough for Benn to learn anything from while fighting him. 147 is so, so deep ATM that Benn can only make the most of himself if he is utterly razor-focused on concrete improvements to his game throughout his career; it's what Crawford and to a lesser extent Ugas have done, and it's what makes them stand out from the Broners of the sport.
